Help with mini titan BLC 40 Esc setup - SOLVED

Hi All,

well ive almost got my mini titan to the stage of its first flight, all the gear is installed and balanced, batteries charged, the only thing i need to do now is setup the ESC that came with the kit.
this is where ive hit a snag. i cant get into the program mode for some reason. does the motor need to be connected to the ESC before you can get in as i thought id leave it disconnected until i had programmed it.

so, when i plug in the battery with the throttle at full i dont get any beeps :( . would someone enlighten me on the finer points of entering programming mode for this unit and advise on if the motor should be connected to the ESC.

for reference the motor needs to be connected to the ESC for programming to function.

im still a complete noob the the power flight side of things.
