Ok, I need some help form you computer wizards out there.
I am trying to install a copy of G3 and am not having any luck.
During install of the second disk at exactly 322900k installed out of 435197k I get the following error log.
Log generated by: C:\DOCUME~1\Eric\LOCALS~1\Temp\Installer\setup2.ex e
[Error] KEError 16502: File copy error: Invalid access to memory location.
.
Bytes read: -1, Bytes written: 0.
Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive.
[Error] KEError 16011: Copy operation failed.
I have never had any other problems installing software on this machine. I have 10GB free hard drive space and 512 memory. I called Realflight tech support and they say they have seen the message but can not help because it is a windows XP problem. They said contact Microsoft. I called Microsoft tech and they helped me check a few things and said that you need to talk to the software maker as things look correct and there is an install issue causing the problem.
Anyway.. been working on it for quite a while with no success. Any ideas?

Eric,
Sometimes application fail during installations and leave some temporary files on your drive that can cause subsequent installations to fail as well. I'm not saying this will fix your problem but...you can safely delete the "Installer" folder located in your "Temp" folder (see your path). That way, a new attempt of the installation will create a new folder and not find any older, possibly corrupt, files and generate another failure. Let me know how it goes.

Eric,
The files are on the disks in uncompressed form, so you should be able to copy it directly. Try copying the file <CD Drive>:\RealFlight\Data\RFV3_2.DCK to <RF Install>:\Data\.
If the file copy is successful, and you don't have DirectX9.0c installed, you should install it from <CD Drive>:\DirectX\DXSetup.exe. If the file copy fails, it is possible that you have a bad disk 2 or possibly some kind of hardware compatibility issue.
I called Realflight tech support and they say they have seen the message but can not help because it is a windows XP problem.
I don't know how they could think it is a Windows XP problem. We are using our own installer, and the installer doesn't work. I'm going to Champaign for a week so I'll be helping out in the technical support group, probably taking some technical support calls.
Anyways, let me know if that works out for you.

Well Travis, I should have emailed you first :D
The first tech apparently was wrong. Just as I posted this up I called again and got a different tech. He said almost the same thing as you, but said that it was probalby a bad disk and he would be happy to send new ones out. He was very helpfull.
After reading you email, I cleaned the crap out of the #2 disk and then put it in my DVD burner "Plextor". I had been using my Pioneer DVD drive as it always worked perfect in the past. Well long story short, either the disk was dirty or it did not like the drive, because it copied just like you said it would when I put it in the Plextor drive.
Thank-you for your quick feedback as you hit it right on the head.

Temp files are one of the secondary achilles heels of the windoze OS. DLL's are the first.

I just got the same problem. Realflight no help. How do I exactly copy the files?

It appears that the gold disk (v3.00.366) was written improperly, causing a bunch of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drive incompatibility problems.
CD-RW drives will usually read the disks without any trouble. If you have a CD-RW drive installed on your PC, try installing from that drive.
You can also go to another computer with a CD-RW drive and make a CD that has a copy of the files on disk 2. You could then use the duplicate on the original PC to copy the files.
If you have a home network with more than one PC, you can share a CD-RW drive and copy the files across the network.

One problem down. I was able to get it to load by copying disc 2. Now I learned that my video card doesn't support DX9!!:( Any advice on a decent vidcard that doesn't break the bank?

I really like my ATI 9600 Pro. They can be had at newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) for about $100.
If you are trying to economize, don't buy a low end graphics card like the nVidia 5200 or 5600 LE cards. You would be better off finding a used Ti4200 or Ti4600. Have a look at toms hardware (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html) for card comparisons.

Can you comment on this card from NewEgg for the G3??

Haven't found the ATI 9600 Pro any place for less than $160. NewEgg doesn't list it in the ATI listings.

I look at www.pricewatch.com when I'm looking for hardware. Maybe a PITA to find a vendor that you feel comfortable with, but you can see a LOT of vendors' prices at a glance.

Lamebird, went to that site and found the 9600 Radeon in Sapphire Technology, Gigabyte and other "names" of cards. In the past I have only used the ATI Technology "brand" of cards. Any problems with these other brand names. Seems that some get much better ratings than others.
This is the one from NewEgg:
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ATLANTIS RADEON 9600"

This is cut from Belarc details of my PC;
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE [Display adapter]
So far it works well, little chopping during some multiplayer sessions, but it plays Doom 3 well...
