View Full Version : If batteries are dying sooner then normal = main motor kaput, yes?

Just making sure, that if I normaly get 4 or more mins per indoor flight now im not even making a 4 min mark with all 6 of my batteries is that the motor dying or the batteries?
I only ask because All these batteries I bought at the same time, they are roughly a month old worth of use i would guess.


PS.

I just did some upgrades, and now it weighs 30g according to my scale(which isnt overly sensitive)
Is that much more then stock?(if it is possibly that is why its dieing so fast)

Hopefully your not using the celectra charger it came with.... I've found that not one of my four celectra chargers would charge the batteries to their appropriate full charge capacity. Only dang thing those little celectra chargers are good for is my Scout batteries.

I have 6 Hyperion G3 160mAh batteries (supposedly one of the better micro lipos) and can average about 4:30 indoor putting around. Take her outside for some fun times and I'm lucky to push 3:45. These batteries were bought at the end of December and one is already going bad.

From the information I've gathered from the many sources out there, there's a couple of things that will mainly determine the life span of these small lipos -- usage and charging / storage habits.

During the early life of these packs, I was putting at least 2 cycles a day on them with my Force FHX battles (Blade mCX2 with IR gun), running them to LVC constantly, and wasn't paying much attention to letting them cool down between charges. I'm also guilty of leaving the packs fully charged or discharged for extended periods of time (a week or two). I'm happy that they've lasted this long, about 150 cycles now, especially when beating them with the mSR X (they get quite warm when zipping around outdoors for almost 4 minutes).

If your flying habits are similar to mine, I'd say it's the batteries. If you baby your packs, then it may be the motor. You could always by a new lipo and see if it makes a difference. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about running your packs to LVC on the mSR X as mine have always come back to 3.7-3.8v after resting a bit, if I do hit LVC with them.

IMO, fly the crap out of it until it won't fly any longer, then worry about replacing things -- taking the proper precautions obviously: charging at the correct rate for your lipo packs, properly disposing of damaged cells, etc.

Seems a bit on the hefty side. Mine weighs in at 25.9g without battery. I have RKH swash, blade grips and rotor hub, plus a 120mm solid tail boom (stock mSR X tail motor w/ KBDD mCPx tail rotor). The added weight certainly could be contributing to the reduced battery life. What "upgrades" have you done to add that much weight, or is your weight calculation including battery?

hyperion eos0606i ac/cd (first thing I bought after the mcx)

I parallel charge at 1c,using (dun dun duuunnn) 160mah nano-techs

After each flight my batteries get quite warm, unlike my 300mah nano's in my mcpx, both birds i only fly for 4mins max at a time,

If you are using a PC to control your charger, use the discharge function set at 1A and graph your results. When I get home today I'll share a graph of a healthy 160 Hyperion (apples to oranges but the graph will indicate our respective voltage drops)

With out battery,
I extended the boom 125mm, put higher gauge tail wire on it and wrapped it with a mesh loom.
added a heat sink to the main motor
plasti-diped the landing gear
(ignore the grips those are from an MCX, and are junk to be replaced by RKH stuff in red)
