I'm amazed at what they can do with pyrotechnics. Caught this one on Saturday.
Happy 4th!

Oh, yeah. I did see the smilie faces last year. I blame emoticons for those, of course.

That's a cool shot, Tip. What'd you shoot it with?

Thanks Mark. D40x Nikon.
The funny thing is we were pretty far away from the city provided "legal" fireworks. This one was launched from his neighbor!

I think the woman in the van parked next to us was getting a bit peeved. She was trying to get shots with her point n shoot with no luck. Meanwhile, I was clicking of shot after shot and reporting to my girlfriend, "these are coming out great". I think I got something like 220 images.

That's a good shot. I love fireworks, there illegal in our city, but they do a big fireworks show that we can see from our balcony and so does another across the water so we get two shows at the same time :glasses2:

I shot a couple hundred images too and got a handfull of nice ones. The tripod and remote help a lot on the longer exposures. I wish I could get my heli that stable!

Our car club is blessed with the presence of a guy with two major attributes:-
He is a licenced pyrotechnician, and is a show-off! He has put on special fireworks shows for our Christmas dinner, and he uses 8 inch mortars, which are the smaller (relative term only!) ones used in professional displays, but he removes half the projectile charges, so the "bottom of the ball" is only 50 feet up! His displays usually last 8-10 minutes, easily long enough for the whole population of the country town where we hold the dinner to drive to the golf course to watch!
He reckons that the normal cost of the display would be over $10k, but we just had to pay the import costs.
There is something extra special watching a 200 foot ball when the bottom is not far above eye level! (I hasten to add that horizontal separation is pretty big :))

Not heli related but this is 2006 New Years in The Hague, Holland. It's such an insane night and you definetley do not want to be on the street. The show usually winds up at about 4 AM.
