Have there been any updates to this charger since it was introduced? I was just looking over the specs and noticed that is was capable of charging A123 cells. Did I just not notice that before or is it new?

A123 support was added a couple of months after release. You need the 1210i-A version of the firmware for A123 support.

Do I have to buy the charger with that version or can I update the earlier charger?

They are not field upgradable so if you don't buy the version with A123 support you will have to send the unit back to the distributor for upgrade. The change was made some time ago so I think you should be OK if you are buying a new unit, just check with the vendor first.
