Hey there guys! I have been kicking around this heli for a bit now. I want to know the truth about the performance and quality STOCK out of the box. It says it can fly on 2 trex packs .. ya I'm sure it can hover and and do some circuits okay.. but has any one tried that set up? I heard lots of bad about the gear too. Please chime in here and say what ya think about this 550. Goods and bads! I have flown with Finless and have seen the performance on his. HOWEVER, it belongs to Finless. The heli was awesome. LOL. This would be just another addition to collection. Thanks guys and Happy 4th!

I have 2 of these-1 is stock and one is to play with and beef up. The stock one has about 40 flights on it and it is showing no signs of any wear and tear on any parts. I would expect a little like my trex 450 had at that point but there is none. That is doihg a little inverted rolling and alot of dives and loops. The 2 3s 2100 packs I use are good for about 8-10 mins with this flying and a little less for hovering and circuits out and back. The best set up for the stock one I have found is 4 of the 2100 packs. Better flight time aND MORE UMPH IF I WANT IT!

If you have a digital camera can you please show us how you are mounting 4 2100 packs on your heli ?
Thanks !

I guess you didnt see me fly it when it was stock. It flys "fair" with stock power. It will loop, roll, flip (though rather slowly) etc on stock. Nothing fantastic stock. Also stock it doesnt strip gears and stuff. The gears are only a problem when powering up like you have seen on my Hurricane.
Anyway here were my first flight vids STOCK using 2 Trex450 packs (FP Evo25 2170 packs).

and the second with only putting on CF blades

You are in the Hurricane page, so the answer is yes.
If you are an extreme 3D pilot, I do not recommend this, at least at this moment I write this post. If you are a beginner and 3D learner, esp. you got packs of 3s1p 2200mAh lipo, then go for it.

Just a thought... doesnt every heli stock out of the box perform fair or less ? It's what you do to it later with upgrades etc that make it a real good 3D machine... but it has to be a good design to, if you want top performance.
What i heard is that hurricane 550 is a really good designed bird with great potential (altough i heard the lipoplacement isnt the best, but that is a easy fix. Just my 2cent's
Im totally new to this, and learning flying and what's good and bad ways of doing things and what to look for etc etc, it's all exciting and fun and i just love that i have got into this helistuff finally.... first got a hurricane 550 then just a few weeks later a t-rex 600 (t-rex needs rx,lipo, gyro), love them both seeing how they are designed etc, i think both are very capable 3D monsters with right kinda engine, lipos,gears,alloyupgrades... the hurricane is much lighter and by that not that expencive as t-rex to upgrade for extreme 3D, and it is littlebit smaller.
I would recommend hurricane 550, cause it has very good potentials, it's a well designed, light, easy to upgrade heli that i really cant find anything wrong with, but out of the box motor etc it performs fair as bob said, and it flies really well.

Please let me be the first to apologize in advance for being rude...however I suspect myself along with Finless, Adrian, Tom V and others here would disagree with you...it IS 3D CAPABLE, however what do you consider Extreme?
Chaos, 4 point tocs, funnel 8's, piro flips? - All VERY capable with the stock gaui frame (align tail) and a decent motor setup.
I agree std ep combo out of the box is not quite up to the challenge of the Taiwan Cup, however the few things we added (albeit inexpensive) Align thrusted tail (H60109) and the GAUI 1500 watt motor we find it a formidable competitor to other machines in the sub-$500 class.
again, accept my apologies in advance for being direct. I just wanted to point out that the machine is very 3D capable.

Yes it is very capable of 3D.
Out of the box it is a gentle flyer but for gooid 3D performance you need to do the following
1) Metal blade grips for safety in my opinion
2) 1100 KV motor
3) Derlin gears and 23T or 24T pinion
4) ALign thrusted or Raptor tail hub and grips
Now that setup is good but I still have some things to get worked out.
1) With the above setup 6S 2500ma packs give me only 4 minutes and less for people that fly like Matt of Readyheli. Larger packs propose pack mounting problems so that has to be worked out. 3300 packs should give 5 minutes and if not 3700 packs but for suire frame mods will be needed to mount those
2) I am still concerned of the splitting auto clutch gear. I will see if the new one from Readyheli (on the way to me now) solves the problem. Others have said that Guai had a problem with early ones but my kit was not that early and was an updated kit. So we shall see.
Other than that the heli can be made very 3D capable.
