I've completed building a TREX 450 V2 today, witha Blackshark fuselage.
It has a Spektrum AR6100 RX, GY401 gyro, 3 Hitec 65HB's and I opted for the Futaba S3154 for the tail servo because the 9650 was too big to fit inside the fuselage.

I'm waiting for delivery of my Tri Blades Rotor Head.
Besides the cool factor, and the potential of the flybar paddles striking the tail end of the fuselage, I think the flybar-less rotorhead my be a necessary upgrade for use of the Blackshark fuselage.

That is slick! Where did you find a Blackshark for the 'Rex?

That is slick! Where did you find a Blackshark for the 'Rex?

I bought it at Jet Hobbies, in Richmond, B.C. Canada, While I was in town.
You can usually find the Mini Blackshark fuselage, up for bid by Jet Hobbies, on eBay.
Or you can order it direct from

Got the Tri Blades Rotor head installed!
It was very difficult to fly, because the collective was too sensitive.
I landed it, set up some Expo in my radio, forgot that I landed in idle up, released throttle hold, did a up-down yo-yo and smashed it into the driveway pavement. :arggg:

Note the red and black mark on the tail. I paint the tips of the rotor blades black and red with a sharpie to aid in blade tracking.
The main rotor blades hit the fuselage tail and bent the aluminum tail shaft in side. I also broke a landing skid, bent the main shaft and one of the linkages stripped out.

Did you ever get this running again? I just learned of this head and was wondering if the expo help you gain better control.

I had heard about flybarless rotorheads being hard to fly on the larger ships (didn't even know they made flybarless for 450's). I had also remembered reading that they had to have some secondary control system (modern day versions of the old Vario setups) to make them flyable. I didn't read anywhere about this head coming with any electronics so I was curious if it is flyable without it or not.

Thanks,

Dave

I have about 15 flights on the three blade head from RC Machine (Flying-hobby.com, etc..)... it doesn't come with any electronics. And it would require a mixer and gyros for the 120 deg. swash... lots of $$... so I'm flying it without any "artificial" aids.

It is very sensitive on the pitch axis, and tends to pitch up or down in turns depending on the direction. It's flyable, but it's a handful. I have dialed in a little bit of expo, but haven't tried it yet. All flights so far have been with no expo.

I dropped the headspeed to 1900, and it helped, but what it really needs is heavier blades (I'm running Align wood 325s). It also needs a speed-up gear for the tail (which is not available for the TRex as far as I know), as tail authority suffers at the lower headspeed, and it won't hold with full collective. Heavier blades will make this worse, but the improvement in stability will be worth it.

I'm still experimenting, as I want to get it flying well before I put a fuselage on it...

Jack from JMD Models is flying that 3 bladed head very successfully without any additional electronics. He's flying woodies that's he's added extra tip weights to.
