Hello, I am planning on getting the mx combo deal they have at tower hobbies, was woundering what would be a good relacement for the helimax 40 esc that comes with the combo, as I heard it was basicilly junk?

I don't think the ESC is too awful bad. Honestly, there are other shortcomings that I'd be more concerned about. In fact, Since I bought my MX450 Ultimate Combo from Tower, the speed control is one thing I've NOT had a problem with.
Really, the only thing I wish it had would be a soft-start mode WITHOUT a brake.
In any case, it's the same ARK ESC that they've been using for a while.

i run the pheonix 25 esc with a external BEC from grandwing and love it ! i started with the helimax esc and had overheating issues
