Hi all,

I've been on the Freak for a while now mostly in the t-rex threads. I've been flying helis for about a year now.

About 6 mos ago I bought a concept 30 (DX I believe) in good shape from a friend. He had upgraded the grips to newer ones that I think are 12mm wide for newer blades, and he put some cheap 530mm woodies on it. I tried to get it running and was actually able to get it hovering, but the motor had no poop and no matter what I tried tuning wise nothing helped, so I just put it under a table somewhat dissapointed.

So now I want to resurect the project. I have a 401 / 9254 to put on it, and I ordered a new piston/sleeve for the OS 32 it has. I added a header tank and paddles from a raptor. I'll probably order a set of NHP 515mm carbon blades. Also I have a pile of spares collected from e-bay.

So, I have some questions:

1. what is the best way to upgrade the wire drive tail? Should I just make a carbon tube verion custom or is there an easier way?

2. is there a boom replacement available? mine is dinged from an apparent boom strike. it will work, but if I can find a reasonably priced carbon boom that would be cool.

3. The pitch is quite limited compared to the new helis. Is there an easy way to get it to more like +/- 10 degrees? I looked at the mixing arms and it seems to me that if I re-drill the mounting holes I may be able to get more pitch. Anyone tried this mod?

4. are any of the aftermarket head upgrades still available?

5. can I get an aluminum clutch bell still?

6. what have I missed?

Thanks for your help guys. I don't expect to 3d this thing, but at least little inverted flight would be cool if I can get it running well enough.

Have fun hovering it, Put a scale body on it, But don't expect anything more from it. Fly it for a while the sell it.
The frame is so flexible you will not get the performance you are looking for. And for what you would spend trying(if you can find the parts) you can buy a new kit that will fly much better out of the box.

I have a number of concept 30s (SRX model ) and have found them to be a little more difficult to setup, and not quite as agile as the calibers. I also found that the exhaust system is very important with the OS 32, and if you don't use a good tuned pipe the helicopter will bog down.

I recently put together a new concept 30 SRX in hopes that my eldest child will get into the hobby. You are probably more demanding of helicopters and I, however I've had fairly good luck with the "wire inside the pipe" drive system.

The concept 30s are fairly rugged, and so I've been using them for "high risk activities" such as learning nose and hovering.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll try to keep my expectations sufficiently low ;) . Keep the feedback coming folks...

Well it's flying :) I put on some NHP 515 carbon blades, the 410 / 9254 gyro / tail servo, and I replaced the piston, sleeve, and ring with the new parts.

Put in some new 30% nitro cool power and started tuning. I started out at 2 1/4 turns out on the main needle which was just pig rich. No power, would not even lift off. Then I just started leaning it out a few clicks at a time until the little motor started screaming a bit more and making some power. Finally got it in the air! Did a few circuits, and it's a nice flying little machine, nice and stable, and smooth. No power though, it climbs out about a tenth as fast as my trex 600 ;) but it's cool. Any suggestions on the correct needle settings? It's still making good smoke but I worry I got it too lean now... It was pretty hot after the second tank, and had a tough time starting again.

Thanks,

-Chris
