Advice on painting canopys

My first attempt at painting a canopy turned into a disaster. I used topflight spray paint (only because it is fuel proof) which would clog up easily and then sputter all over giving an ugly uneven coat. To make matters worse when I used the clear coat it hazed over at certain parts.

What type of paint do you guys use to get those awesome paint jobs and what do you coat them with to fuel proof them?
