How is your Diablo holding up? Anything worth mentioning?
Thanks,

It's doing fine..... Crashed it once but still going great.

Mine is still in the box waiting for servos and gyro. Can't decide what to get yet. This bird looks too nice to crash. How did the parts hold up in your crash?

Usual crash stuff.... flybar, mainshaft, spindle, blades.
Get good servos and in my opinion there is no better choice.
Get Hitech HS-65MGs or be prepared to replace servo gears in a crash.

Placed an order for the 65mg as per your recommendation together with a 401/9650 combo.
This bird deserves it.

I can understand the recommendation for for the 65mg. I have probably put enough gear sets in my 56's to have bought a dozen 65mg. Of course this was for my HDX 450 learning machine, I don't crash near as much now. Probably more careful too flying the Hurricane 550 XES and Knight 50 nitro.

Another excellent option for the cyclic is the SDG-402MG, which is a SJM metal gear digital 5v/6v servo and produced by a very good manufacturer in South Korea (who just happens to make some servos for HITEC as well). Replacement gear sets and servo horns are also available.

Scott,
I am going to be ordering some servos in a few weeks for my skyshark and i may just try these.
I was hoping they had the three mounting holes like the 65's so when i strip my DS285's in my mini titan i could possibly use these if they ended up working out. All the cnc upgrades for the servo trays on the MT are for 2 hole. Have you heard any possibilities to a case change in the near future?

Really cool video and, I think i will add this bird to my collection!
Thanks scott for the sweet tail servo I purchased from RC-tek and the fast shipping.:) My trex really can hold its tail nice!

We have talked with the factory in South Korea and they have stated there are no plans to change the casing at this time. That doesn't mean they won't get sick of us asking and do something in the future, but it would require changes on our end as well... ;)

hey guys/girls, now that it's warming up, i am starting to get the skyshark 450 in the air!!!
i have a 401-9650 tail, a jrX9303, and a spektrum 6 channel reciever in it.
in preliminary hovers, it would tip back with a level head and tracked blades, sure enough, the CG was back, so I switched my tail servo around, put on a CF boom, and i took off the tail idler pulley as well as move the battery forward.
have you found that the idler pulley is necessary on this heli? because in idle 2, when the throttle is around 100%, the tail begins to wag quickly.(it does not wag around 70% in idle1) Everything is tight in the tail mech. but it seems that this tail has a lot of slop compared to a TREX what do you think?
also, this is my first 401, and i thought it was strange that there was no gain setting on the gyro itself. I set the delay to 0 like the manual said, but my gyro sense menu in my TX doesn't seem to do anything, (i have adjusted it from 51% to 100%). how do i set everything up the right way? have any tips?

I don't use an idler pulley on my Diablo and have never had the belt "jump the track".
I never had much luck getting the Gyro Sense menu to work either, so I have my gear channel set to GEAR and use the Gear switch to flop between rate and HH mode. When you have the transmitter configured this way, you use the travel adjust on the gear channel to set the gain.

Sadly, the gyro menu on the x9303 can only be used on the AUX 2 channel so you will need at least a 7ch. Rx if you want to use it. Otherwise you have to use the gear channel as metioned above.
Also, it sounds as if your wagging problem is just that your gain is too high. The higher headspeed you're getting in idle 2 requires a little less gain as the tail is spinning faster as well.

thanks for the replies, that worked perfectly! All the wag is gone, and it is officially ready to rip up the local park.

"Even though I show new people on the 401 to set up the "easy way" by just centering everything the real truth is the 401 should also be set up rate mode too for best performance. BUT on a Trex450 doing so will limit you because of the geometry of the tail design. The 401 only has one limit pot so if you set up rate mode you cant get full deflection in one direction and has you know the Trex needs all the tail control it can get. The 2100 you can set the limit on each side so setting rate mode works."
Bob,
Been flying the Diablo with the 401 setup as as per your videos. After reading this post, as a test, I setup my 401 on Rate Mode just like you mentioned here, and after adjusting the servo wheel, link and travel limit, sure enough, I don't get full deflection on left rudder. When I give left rudder, the pitch slider just gives a little bit of pitch from neutral. I don't see any problems with this mechanically since the heli doesn't really need any help turning to the left.
My questions is, per your experience, is there a danger of losing tail control with this kind of setup :thinking? BTW,
the reason why I am testing this setup is because I am trying to get rid of the wag when stopping a fast descent. I have adjusted GAIN but I still get a lot of bounce when doing this. I watched hard 3d videos and I don't see any tail wag even with those sick maneuvers.
Thanks.

Gencollon,
The tail output shaft in my Diablo has a slight lateral play inside the tail unit. I am experiencing some tail wag too as described in my other post, when stopping a fast descent. I too am wondering if this slop is the culprit since lowering the gain does not seem to get rid of that wag.

The pulley will have nothing to do with wag. Wag is all gyro and tail setup. If your getting a wag, lower your gyro gain as a start.

Thank you for the compliment Blade Strike. It does attract a small crowd in the field were I fly.
If only my piloting skills can match that look..;)

Are you still using the stock rc-tek ESC with the scorpion motor? I set mine to mid timing and after a few flights with the scoprion -8, it started acting up. The ESC resets itself, forgetting low and high throttle settings. From idle up and going to normal during landing, resulting into 3 hard landings when the motor cut-off unexpectedly before the throttle reached low point.

I am drooling over the Diablo and am currently flying an Axe. Now that I am doing curcuits and figure 8's, I really want to start from scratch and setup my dream Diablo. I'm starting with my radio by selling my Futaba 6xas. I'm going to get a DX7 but when I get on Ebay, I can find just such a radio with several different options. Of course I can also get the DX7 at my LHS with servos for $350 but I will want different servos for my Diablo. My question is, what receiver should I be looking at for my Diablo, 6100, 6200, 6300, 7000.
Thanks,
David

A 6100 is just fine. By the time the heli gets far enough out to need a receiver with a satellite, you won't be able to see it very clearly.

Thanks Alan. I'm gonna try to piece this thing together as I get the money available. That Diablo sure is sweet!
