View Full Version : Is it suppose to be this difficult?

Man i havent even set up my servos yet!! Ive been working on this thing for like 5 days now. I suppose im just kinda venting, but im finding it very difficult to put this thing together. Even with the build videos. I have no doubt in my mind that eventually i will get it done.. but maaaaaaaaan this is much more difficult than i had originally expected.
One thing inoticed is that my Pitch goes to high when i go high and too low on both ends. When it's center... the swash is centered. Also i had to reverse some of my servo switches on my dx-7... which i recall bob saying on one of his videos that you shouldnt have to mess with that stuff unless you fly the tail (which i do) but im talking Alerion, Elevator, and pitch servos here. I double checked to see if i had put the servos on backwards and they arent.
For the pitch going to high does that just mean i have to go through my TX and program it before i start hooking stuff up?

A few settings from my DX7 which you might find handy. Your setup may vary according to how you plug everything in & what servo's you use, so just take these as a general guide...
CH2 Aile & CH3 Elev are reversed, the rest all norm. That is with 3x Spektrum servo's with 401/9254.
GYRO SENS menu - AUTO, RATE 0:90%
SWASH MIX menu - 3 servos 120, AILE-50%, ELEV+50%, PIT-+50%
The pitch +50% setting controls how much the swash goes up & down at full stick travel each way (I think , learner myself). IIRC it came at 60% from the factory & I reduced it down.
For learner hovering around you can leave the pitch & throttle curve's at the defaults of 0,25,50,75,100%. No need to worry about Idle up settings & flicking switches etc as you won't need them for a while.
Setting everything up seems a bit daunting at first, once you've done it, flew it & made an adjustment or two, it all then seems fairly straightforward & you wonder why it seemed so confusing in the first place. It's understanding what order to set things up in that I had to get my head around. Do I do this before that etc. Watching the Finless vids is very helpfull. You'll get there :)

What differences did you see with the 50 s. the 60% ? Is it only travel?

Yeah, it was to reduce the up & down movement of the swash at full down & full up stick. Gave me -10,0,+10 pitch if I'm using my pitch guage correctly  .
At 60% all round (default settings IIRC), you could see & feel stress being put on ball joints when you also had full corner cyclic going on at the same time. I think Bob mentioned this in his head set up vid & altered his settings a bit. I removed a bit from the washout arm too, as per the vid to stop it hitting it'self.

Thanks for posting those settings. Hopefully that helps... Ok also which side is Aleiron and which Side is Elevator? Everytime Alieron and Elevator are metnioned people talk about them at the same time and never really differentiate which is which... i understand what the two do... but i dont understand how to tell which is which.

I think you can have either side as A or E. You can alter various settings in the Tx to make all the servo's work as they should. So long as when you push the throttle up all 3 cyclic push the swash up, down with down stick & they tilt the swash the same way you push the cyclic stick when you view the heli from behind, all will be well, hopefully. What servo's/gyro are you using?

Im using the same set up that finless used in his videos

So, if one never watched the video how would one know what servos and gyro you are using.
From the tail view, conventional use puts the aileron on the left and the pitch on the right. But it really does not make a difference because it will work either way.

I highly recommend you watch the full set of Finless Trex 450 SE videos as although it is a different heli, he covers a lot of basic concepts which will help you a lot. At an absolute minimum watch all the "Xxx 101" videos plus definitely CCPM1 and CCPM2 and : http://www.helifreak.com/viewtopic.php?t=12455
You might also find it useful to watch Jermo's DX7 setup video: http://www.helifreak.com/viewtopic.php?t=30926

Yeah thats where i went wrong... it was all the Programming of the TX... setting the limits at all points (high stick-mid stick-low stick) And I watched the swash setup video under the (xxx101 vids) newbies forum which is helping me become a little more savvy with my DX-7. I did watch all those videos... but it has been a while. And when i watched them the first time all i had was 2 RTF helis. Never had to set up a TX/RX and put everything together. Im learing a ton though and enjoying the small victories now.
QUICKSTER my setup is : DX7 - 401/9254 - 3xDS821
Purposely got the same stuff finless was using just so i would have something to fall back on.

joskibob,
I also run a DX7 and if you need any more help with setup for the Hurricane, let me know.

Does anyone have a link to an article on how to use the GYRO SENS settings on DX7's / JR radios? I've been using the end-point settings the gear channel, but I suspect since this has an actual setting, I should understand my radios.
Thanks...

Go to this link http://www.helifreak.com/viewtopic.php?t=30926 It's in Finless Bob's Tech section and download Jermo's video. It helped me understand a lot about the DX7 including setting the Gyro up. Hope this will help and thanks Bob and Jermo.
