Are the aftermarket fusuno canopies stronger / thicker than the stock canopy?

I really like it but its just too thin for my liking.

I'm not worried about weight :-)

Mine is about the same. Pretty thin, but does the job without adding excess weight.

Over the pond people use a fiberglass kit from a car shop called Halfords to strengthen the canopy in the nose cone and around the canopy stand offs and retainer holes. I got some cracking on my Jolly bee after 10-20 flights but no problems on my new one so far with this method.

100+ flights, 2 crashes and repaired (cracked in the side and in the lower section).
Imho a great canopy so far, and i also like them as light as possible btw

I'm over the pond and that was going to be my fix if the aftermarket were the same.

Its the thinnest canopy I've ever had.

Fusuno Tdr canopy is super thick in comparison. I know its weighty :-)

Hello,

the reason why it is that thin is simple. Super flexible and still not shacking in flight -> less damage during daily use and in case of crash.

I wouldn't pay a penny to get a thicker and more brittle one and I guess all aftermarkt canopys are about the same.

BTW.: Thats one point I hate most on the old 6HV Canopys.

Greetings
Sebastian

I thought it was a cool feature that it was thin and flexible. The finish on my is very good also.

I like it so much a got a spare (just in case I do something stupid).

Thats ok :-)

Off to halfords tonight for some fibreglass fun. Going to do my other canopies as well while i'm at it.

I've seen some people use kitchen roll and super glue to strengthen stress points with good success as well.

I had a chance to build two of these kits now and it seems the first one had quite a thin canopy even with cracks in it out of the box. I flew with it and when going to higher RPM (2200) that canopy resonated badly and shook like crazy making some real scary and weird sounds. This also caused damage to the canopy at different points where it could touch something like cyclic linkage for example. I did not have the rubber skid nuts installed on the canopy posts at the time but neither did the manual talk about installing some. Those posts should be a little longer and include some soft rubber plugs not hard plastic to avoid those resonating vibrations.

But the second kit had a canopy which was somewhat sturdier and had much better finish. Not sure why the quality varies from kit to kit. I am now using the rubber skid tube nuts on the posts which I had to borrow from the Atom.

Vlad,

I installed some foam tape inside the canopy, where the to posts touch it. This prevents it from resonating.

I like the idea of rubber skid tips or canopy nuts better.

Thanks for the tip Richard  I might do just that as an additional measure. These types of details should be dealt with by the manufacturer though. The kit has been out for quite some time now. I like all the Compass machines I have/had but the attention to details seemed to always lack and those details are sometimes simple but quite annoying.

The stock canopys for the 7HV are made by Fusano.

That.

I don't see the material used in the stock canopy to be a problem at all. In fact, it's very resilient. I've crushed mine a little inside my Pelican case, and it pops right back to its original shape without cracking.

This is what I use on the poles:

White rubber like stuff, They are used to protect threaded parts during powder coating i believe, cheap and effective :).

Well that looks good actually. But I have no idea where to find something like that.

Search for silicone caps / powder coating

The 7HV skid nuts fit very well, just slip on 2 per side.

YOu can also use rubber vacuum line plugs from the auto store. I have three of these canopies and all of mine are similar as far as layup and finish goes.

On the canopy topic, has anyone tried the magnetic mounts from rcbooya (or any others for that matter)?

The only ones I could find for the 7hv were these: http://www.nankinhobby.com/Helicopters/Accessories/Accessories/RCBooya-7HV-Canopy-Mounts-Black-/prod_6797.html

The thumbscrews are a little tedious.

ddddave,

I am running the Booya's from the link you posted. I kept putting the thumb screws down and losing them (I am about a thousand years old).

I don't have to worry about it with the Booya's!

Never tried the magnetic ones, though.

Thanks Ah Clem - I actually had just assumed those were magnetic but I see now that they are not. Sounds more secure without the magnets actually.

Another booya user here too:thumbup: Great stuff.

Anyone noticed the canopy guide at the bottom of the canopy that slips over the lug comes of in fast backwards or rainbows?? I've had to put some electrical tape on mine to stop this.

Ian using the RCBooya ones. Like them, knew I was going to lose the screws so never used them at all. 316905
