As my Axe CP is my first RC heli can anyone tell me the approximate range of a basic FM radio? I'm curious how far I can fly before the signal drops off?

It will control the heli far beyond the point where you can :wink:
that's to say that you will have lost the ability to see the rotor disk(and make proper corrections) well before the radio loses contact with the receiver.
The axe is pretty small to boot, so again, I think that you'd have orientation loss before signal loss. It gets pretty hard to tell what's going on with a T600 if you try and fly those big traffic patterns the plank guys do, trust me :arggg:
Numbers wise- I'd guess that the radio link has authority out to at least a mile or so, but that's a guess based on line of sight, and the power output of the transmitter, somebody will clear it up if I've told ya wrong! :lol:
