This is probably a stupid question but I am building a new 400 size heli, Hoss X4 frame, T-rex head and tail, Z-power Z10A motor, Hitec 65MG on the swash, Logictech 2100 gyro and Futaba 9650 on the tail. The only thing left to decide is the ESC. I have a GAUI 50 AMP ESC and I wonder if this is useable on this heli. I know it is overkill, but will it work or can a ESC be to powerful for the motor?
Of course I would need a BEC as well.

Well..... I think that would work but you don't need the extra weight. I would suggest a CC 35.

Yes, I probably should, but that's another 70+ dollars. I am not to concerned about the weight. The Z10 is a powerful motor and I am not a heavy 3D guy.

OK, but what do I go for, the CC 35 or the Gaui 50 ?? And by the way, I have decided to try the new Futaba 9257 on the tail. This heli will probably be one of a kind. Don't know what I should call it ? Can't wait to start building it.

To answer you question, no, the ESC doesn't "push" power into the motor, it just supplies what the motor draws. So yes, you can safely use a 50A ESC on a 450-class heli that really only needs a 30A ESC.

Thanks kgfly for clarifying.... I enjoy reading your posts very helpful. You must type like 200 words a minute! :lol

Not entirely thrue that 450 size heli needs only 35A esc.

I had a cutoff that resulted in a crash as I think my motor (ALign 430L 3550 kV) draws too much juice from my esc (QUARK 33).

WHenever I come down, I noticed that my motor is too hot to touch and my esc is also hot.

Subsequently when I change out to an efficient motor Z10A, everything is working fine...so far !!...

There is no binding and pitch/throttle curves per Finless video.

A 450 heli that's pulling more 35A sustained has a problem. In your case I venture there was a mismatch in your setup between the motor and the ESC. This is clearly indicated by how hot both were getting. The cutoff was almost certainly due to thermal shutdown of the ESC or BEC or both. Glad to hear that the Z10 and Quark33 are playing nicely together.
