It's very important that the battery to controller wires be correct, as they are in the picture, but the controller to motor wires are not critical. I don't know the reason why as they can be connected in any way as long as the motor turns in the right direction.

The 3 outputs to the motor are all identical but with 120degree phase delays. If the motor turns in the wrong direction change any of the two wires (so it goes from ABC to ACB).
