View Full Version : Started engine in Idle Up, something burned up

I use the same transmitter for my 600 nitro and 450 V2. I had been flying the V2 earlier in stunt mode and forgot to put the transmitter back in normal when starting the nitro.
So obviously, when I started up the nitro the engine spun up to 100%, but luckily I had the blades held down while starting the engine like I always do. Something started smoking before I could clamp the fuel line to shut off the fuel supply ( didnt realize I was in idle up).
Now when I try to hover, the blades don't respond to the engine until about half throttle. I know I burned something up in the clutch assembly but don't know what yet until I take it apart.
Any ideas what I burned up? I won't have time to take it apart for a few days so I'm wondering how much this is going to cost me.

I'm sure thats one of the multiple things that went up in smoke.
Also, when I pick up the chopper, I can hear something "jingling" around like a washer or bolt somewhere in the clutch assembly.

I nuked my clutch yesterday and after replacing the liner and flying it today I also have a jingling noise. I have it apart now trying to determine where the noise is coming from.

Let me know what you find, mine might be the same problem.

Definately burned out the clutch liner - I've done that twice in similar circumstances when sorting out my governor - take the clutch out from the top as per video http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=mercuriell&filename=CLUTCHRELINETOP.wmv to check it out - not sure about the metal jingle - maybe a bolt come loose or broken clutch shoe :(

Yep you burtn up the clutch liner and the clinking is probably a broken off shoe on the clutch. If the liner is gone what happens is if you try to start it again and run it the clutch shoes flex out much farther than designed and usually break off. If you have a hot start ever again DONT try to start it and test it as you might be able to at least save the clutch from breaking shoes off.

A small piece of advise for those that will hot start in the future. Rather than pinching the fuel line, grab the rubber extension on the pipe and pinch that. Pinching the fuel line takes longer to kill the motor.

Good tip Matt!!! That is very true and works well. i remember my first hot start and FREAKED out trying to stop the damn thing.

Just to clarify, you're talking the exhaust deflector, correct? Pinching off the exhaust will shut it down faster than fuel?

Yes and the reason is just pulling the fuel line you now have to wait for the engine to burn off the fuel in the crank case which can be several seconds ands thus more heat and burn up of the clutch will occur. Pinching the exhaust will cause the exhust pressure to back up and wont allow the engine to pull in more fuel from the crank case into the compression chamber. This will happen in only a few strokes and thus is much faster for killing the engine.

If I broke the clutch shoe, then this is what I need to get which is the actual clutch? I guess the shoe is the wedge parts on the clutch itself in the below pic?

Then I just need to get a new liner and that should be it?
I haven't had time to open it up yet, I think I'll just order that clutch and liner and hopefully not have to order anything else in the future.
