I work for a company that does spill response. Do any of yall know of a anybody that uses a RC heli for maybe air sampling. or other things that deal with stuff like that. And do you think the motors and ESC aor considered exsplosion proof, and ore there any.

Well I don't know to how strict a standard they would be compared, but since for a brushless DC motor it is all electronic switching there are no sparks (in normal operation) so that is a step in the right direction. The servo motors have brushes so I suppose there could be sparks generated inside them. If that is so you could probably seal them around the seams and cable grommet but I am not sure what you could do about the output shaft.

Interesting idea :)

Sound like it could possibly work seal the servos with silicone. Do you think it is a good idea or bad?(use heli for that)

Couldn't possibly say as I have no experience or knowledge about working in explosive gas environments. Could be fun trying though ;)

now this is an interesting post, I recently joined the oil industry, and particularly in the Health&Environment department. gas monitoring is part of my job (i guess) using portable gas monitors.

we here have a 'work permit' system, catergorized to types like Extremely hazardous work, hazardous, and non hazardous. when we take a small point and shoot camera to a site of investigation that is in operation, we need to sign the extremely hazardous work permit. I guess a worry about sparks exists, and the liability will be on the permit issuer and permit owner should something goes wrong.

point is, it'll be a big risk for you as an operator more than anything. we had nuke type explosions just because of gas leaking to cars surrounding the area (not crude oil).

in my opinion, it is unless your 200% sure of the gas monitoring system is in operation of the site (or preferably shutdown facilities), it would be a big risk that may lead to catastrophies.

Thats what I'm talking about in and around refineries. And around HAZMAT spills. Also are you from the US working over there, KBR?

There are lots of sparks generated on a helicopter from static discharges.
