View Full Version : Initial throttle curve for OS50SX - not Hyper

Had to shelve the plans for the maiden flight of my Raptor for a few weeks and now I've got a little time to dive back into it. I've got the mechanicals all set, gyro is dialed in, governor is set (Throttle Jockey) based on info gleaned at raptortechnique.com and all I need is a good starting point for throttle curves and a target headspeed.
I'd appreciate a decent starting point...
Thx!

Yeah, I've looked there many times. Just looking for the proverbial "2nd opinion".
Thx!

Start with Mikes curves on Raptor Tech is my opinion.
Its going to depend on several factors, you're going to have to find out what works for you.
Do you want 3/4 stick hover or half stick in normal mode (I'd highly suggest 3/4)
Do you want snappy response (hs 2000) or fuel econonmy (hs 1750 or so)?

3/4 stick hover is what I'm used to on my 3 'leccy birds and I'm shooting for a HS right around 2k like I run on my Trex 600. Basically, I'm looking for longer runtimes than the 600 so I can get in more real stick time. I don't do much in the way of "stunts" - rolls, loops, flips and I'm just starting to work on inverted hovering at altitude - but other than that, just flying circuits for the most part.

Hey Kevin, I've always gone with the 0-50-100 linear throttle curve as a "starting point" - with 0 degrees pitch at mid-stick as well. Let me preface that with the fact that I run a Hyper 50, not an SX, and that was at the very beginning...running VERY rich.
Is your SX brand new?
After that starting point, I usually listen to the headspeed and back it up with my hubby taching it for me. As I lean out the motor, that's when I find that I have to bring the high point and mid point values down...maybe something like 80-85 at high stick and 40-45 at mid-stick.
Go through all the setup and tuning manually before engaging your TJ at all. That way if it fails, you'll have good curves to fall back on. I love my TJ and it hasn't given me any problems, but I still went through all the setup steps to ensure flight safety if it were to fail.

Yeah, the TJ isn't going to be enabled until I've got it set up properly on just curves. I've got it set for 3 speeds.. 1650 in NOR, 1800 in IDL1 and 2000 in IDL2. I'm going to shoot for similar RPMs with my curves as well. Sound reasonable?

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

Sounds good!
I think the last time I checked I was running about 1750 in normal, 1800/1900 in ST 1/2. I'm slowly upping my values in ST 1/2 to 1850/2000.
Right now I have my 50SE all torn apart for a complete alcohol bath and bearing check-up/replacement. For 3 years this heli has served me WELL! I had an itch to build and lack of funds for a whole new project...solution: rebuild something I already have! :-)

I'm doing something similar, but not with a helicopter. I'm rebuilding my field box so I can start this thing. :)

Hey, aren't you still "building" a big hole in your back yard as well???

Thanks for all the good info here, guys. I just read the raptor techinique page and have a much better concept of how to get my throttle curves going. I was just getting ready to start tweaking my throttle curves when my 50 SX-H exploded.

Yep, good ole Smirnoff is one of the best cleaners I know.
Just kidding! (I don't drink.)
Soooo glad I decided to do this rebuild: so far, I've only had to replace 2 bearings (main shaft). My clunk fuel line was all but GONE. It was so limp that it actually hung straight down from the fuel stopper piece and kinked itself from the weight of the clunk. Pull on it a bit the the tubing wanted to pull apart just about. Replaced the glow plug just on good measure. I lit the other one and it was probably getting ready to give me my first real auto. :p
Let's see...I started adding my purple screw/bolt kit now that it's been sitting in my shop for over 2 years. All I have left is rebuilding the swash up and the tail. Then radio re-install.

Yep get something decent like Hayes clunk line, the stuff that comes with the kits is crap.

Yep. Stonework is complete, slide has been shot & smoothed, retaining walls are completed and scratch coated. I'll be getting the drainage and irrigation pipe on the back hill this weekend and then the flatwork and poolhouse slab will be poured. Once the poolhouse is framed, they'll install equipment, plaster the thing and we'll be swimmin'! Once the gallery is back online, I'll drop some updated pics in there.
Oh, to get back or topic, gonna try to light off the Raptor tomorrow morning... :)

Thx, but I'll "struggle" with it and figure 'em out as I go. Turns out I wasn't able to break out the Raptor yesterday so it'll have to wait for next weekend.
