View Full Version : Newbies flying at the IRCHA Jamboree?

I'm curious: Are there typically any newbies that fly at the IRCHA Jamboree? The only videos I see are of these hot 3D flyers, so it gives the impression that the event excludes flying by those who haven't progressed to the point where they can do some sort of aerobatics.

I think a lot of fun-fly events might feel like that. When you see the stations being used by pilots that fly pretty darned well, and there's an audience of some size, a beginner might feel intimidated enough to not get his radio out of impound and fly around a bit.
That being said, I'm still a noob, and I find a chance to fly even if I'm the worst around. I try not to worry about being judged against the skills of others and just let myself have fun. As long as you're an AMA member, and probably an IRCHA member for the Jamboree, and have the experience to fly safely in the presence of spectators, I doubt you'll ever be excluded from flying at such an event.

I'd imagine there are alot of new pilots out flying. It's just most camera crews ignore them.

That would be my hope. Still, it would be nice if RunRyder or HeliFreak could post just a single video of a new pilot hovering around. I think it would help complete the "big picture" of the event. Maybe someone *has* posted such a video, but I haven't found one.

I don't compare to any of the pilots you see on the vids from IRCHA... I just got back home and was there Friday morning through Sunday late morning.
I made several flights the whole weekend and I enjoyed every one of them. I even got some comments about a "good flight" from one of the big boys. He knew I was having fun and flying at my own level and knew I was still pushing myself on that tail slide that stopped at way over 50' high.
Point is... I'm not a 3D pilot and I made as many flights as I wanted to and everyone was just as happy to help and watch me fly when I was at one of the stations.
Dang, I had a great time.

Cool! Thanks for the report. I may have to see if I can manage a trip there within the next couple of years.

Yeah, the less "exciting" flights don't make the videos but that shouldn't discourage you from flying. Nobody's going to give you a hard time and you might just get some help with your flying. It's a great time for all and with 2.4 on the scene it was a lot easier to get a frequency than last year. It's only going to get better. Definately make the trip if you can!

Yeah, it was my first IRCHA event and I figured all the flying would be way over my head so I didn't even bother bringing my bird...
However once I got there Friday I was angry that I chose not to. I don't think the event isn't as fun if you don't bring something to fly (you feel left out).

I enjoyed talking Finless in to letting me fly his night rig T-Rex telling him "I am just going to hover it. I won't crash" He was like, "You going to give me at least $100 if you crash it"
I spooled it up and zig-zagged it across the night sky. Out of the corner of my eye I could see him trying to figure out how to get the radio out of my hands.
I did not crash either :p

There are lots of people of ALL skill levels flying at IRCHA. The great thing about an event like that is there are lots of opportunities to learn from the other pilots around you. The best pilots out there are always willing to talk to a newbie and welcome them to the hobby. That is what is so great about this group, you can actually hang out with the best of the best and not feel out of place. Anybody that flies helis and has not been to a major event is really missing a great opportunity. IRCHA 2007 was definitely worth the trip!!
