Bergen Intrepid Gasser EB Kit Parts & Build Photos

Hi Everyone,

Looks like my work schedule is going to let me have time to finally inventory the parts to my new Gasser EB Kit!! Here are a couple of quick shots of the kit contents and how it is packaged. The first pic is how all the hardware comes, in one long sleve and separated. makes it really to inventory and make sure it is all there. Easy... I like that. :)

Man Will, You must be special. He even sent you a Strongbox!!

In case anyone out there isn't familiar with it, the strongbox is for the receiver, packed with foam, to protect it in the event of a crash. I have never damaged a receiver from a crash, (and I have had my share!) It also isolates it from any vibes in the heli.

I got to spend about 1 hour today starting construction of my new and gorgeous Gasser. YIPPEEEEE!!

One cool thing I noticed already is that the Canopy Standoffs are counter bored to make it easier to get your canopy screws started. Nice touch Bergen!! I like that, make it simple to get the canopy screws in. ;)

I don't fly Bergen. But that is still left over from the mid 90's.
MA use to put a similar pattern in the switch plate.
That pattern and location would be where the control box for a Futaba 153 BB gyro would be placed. The 153 was dual gain, so the two holes would be to have access to the two pots on the control box. The four holes are where the bolts would hold the control box in place.

I knew I would show my age when I answered that. But I still get a kick when someone fires up a heli with a mechanical gyro in it. All these young pups want to know where that whirring noise is coming from when the heli is turned on. :dontknow

I still have a Bergen front radio tray for an X-Cell in storage that has those cut-outs in it. I have 2 or three of the military version Futaba 153 gyros as well left in my old parts boxes and a JMW regulated gyro that MA used to sell as well. That was all top-of-line equipment in it's day.
I even made the fatal mistake of "shutting up" the old mechanical gyro one time 'cause it was bugging the wife while I was doing set-up. I unplugged the gyro from the control box and the next day at the field completed an eventful flight with the old shuttle ZXX. All was well until the flair to land and the tail broke loose. I still managed it to the ground (landed it! :banana ) then realized that I had just flown without a gyro at all.

Got a chance to work a little on my Intrepid today. Will get even more time tonight after my son goes to bed...finally.:)

Here are some photos of how the build is going.

Only gripe I have so far (don't laugh please) is that Bergen machines have servo mount tabs that take the place of the eyelets that come with the servos. Thit does not come with the screws to mount the servos, the directions say to use the screws that come with the servos. Using Futaba servos, the screws are to small and to short to work with these mounting tabs. Luckily since I used to fly only JR, I had plenty of screws that would work. I know this is a very minor gripe, but I thought I would mention it. So far, no other issues/gripes with any of the construction so far.

Will...I thought the same thing abouy the Futaba screws! My LHS had packs of JR screws (20 for $1.95)...

Also make sure you loctite the tail transmission shaft into the front bearing...the shaft only goes in about 1/2 way into the bearing race and you don't want it spinning inside the bearing race...Yes Will I learned this by experience...I could have sworn I loctited mine but I must not have and it wore down both the bearing inner race and the shaft...

Looks good...I get to build and set up an EB soon for a friend that is placing an order for one on Monday! Can't wait to try out the EB!

Yes they are Jason. I love how smooth and tight with ZERO play the controls are on Bergen Machines. It is a little something different to figure out for a guy with Raptor and MA background like me, but the challenge of getting it right is what keeps me interested. I'll be working on the radio install/setup of my Observer today. :) Waiting on my driven tail parts I just got for my Intrepid. This EB has the Industrial Tail Box, I will try to get a closeup pic today it is REALLY fine. I will check on your tailbox this morning.

Intrepid Gasser EB Open Tail Box and Servo mounting pics.

This is the same tailbox as the Industrial Twin, it is AWESOME in quality and construction and smoothness. A really nice piece to say the least. :)

The second photo is of the servo mounting of the elevator and throttle servos. You can see the screws holding then in. I used the black rubberized carbonized CA John turned me onto to make sure the screws don't backout. The servos are mounted so that the rubbers can absorb some vibs, pretty cool mounting arrangement.

No problem on the tailbox. Chris and Larry are looking at it and going to put a new gear in. No hurry I know they will get it back to us soon as they can.

In fact in typical Bergen fashion I got a PM from Chris today about my post above. :D
I didn't mean for it to sound like I was impatient or that it wasn't getting done. It kind of came off that way. Sorry guys! :D
In fact it probably didn't hit Larry's desk (Where Chris said he saw it. :D ) till Wednesday of last week so if it makes it back by the end of this week that would be quick in my book. :D

I am really wanting to try out one of those Industrial tailboxes, but I want to be able to get the mesh set 100% on the origianals before we upgrade this one to the stretch and new tailbox. Maybe the winter project for next year. :D
The stock Intrepid tailbox is so stout anyhow, but those larger gears I think will wear better over time and handle the torque of these gas motors better.

Thanks for the info Jason. Your post did not come off as impatient at all. Not a big deal. I am really looking forward to flying my EB. Waiting for motor now, it should be here soon. :) You coming up to IRCHA this year? If so you are very welcome to fly my EB at that time to see what you think of it. It would be nice to finally get to meet you!! Chris is quick on the draw to help. I have to be faster to be helpful and earn my keep. :D

Is it just me or shouldn't your elevator servo shaft be mounted the other direction... I don't say this to pick, but because I'm building mine now and if I'm wrong I'd like to fix it.

Elevator and Throttle servos both go in with the output shaft toward the rear of the heli on the Gasser EB.
