Wow....That was good luck.

I unplug both packs after every flight just for this reason and I don't use a UBEC. :D
Figure if I have no connection then nothing can draw down on them not even the ESC.

Glad you got the packs cycled back.

I have recently about 15 flights ago started using a UBEC. It is excellent, hope it keeps working. It is definitely unnatural though to NOT have to charge that machine. Can't wait to get some good footage of Bobby ringing out his Ion's at Ft. Lauderdale!! ;) Not THAT is gonna ROCK!

be carefull with that ubec. me and a couple of guys here had nothing but problems with them and caused some crashes. i loved them but had to go with duralites cause they caused to many problems here.

Interesting hjcscm...

No problems here yet.... Maybe I should just get a 2800mah DL pack for the heli???

yeah we have had 4 diferent people crash there ions from ubecs. only one of them went out before plugging in the second battery like we all thought would happen. mine was the wierdest one. everything would work fine but as soon as the motor spooled up i had no control over the heli. once the motor stopped everything would work fine. almost killed a set of lipos cause of that one. finally decided to go with the duralites. hate charging them but much safer i think

I have made up some 2s2p 1660 mah packs that work very well in the ION and they are small and light

Just want to chime in here and say that I have over 500 flights on my Joker CX that uses UBEC's and I have had no problems whatsoever. I fly this thing to the limits of range (eyesight) and I have had no problem with decreased range checks etc. I run 2 UBECs in parallel for redundancies sake now but flew with just one for a long time. For me the risk in using the UBEC is far smaller then the risk of forgetting to charge a flight pack or having a regulator fail etc.

i kinda like the 2 for redundancies. sounds like a good idea. i would love to go back to the ubec but it scares me. twice i had ubecs fail when the motor would spool up and i had no controll of it. luckily it happend on the ground. just scary to see the heli spinning and no control or way to stop it.

I switched for voltage consitancy i get 5.1 all the time!! Makes a differance!!

Bobby, I am not sure I follow you. The UBEC provides a constant 5.1 or 6v depending on what unit you choose.

The only regulator I have personally seen that will maintain a tighter tolerance under load is the fromeco unit.

That said with the loads we are experiencing in flight the UBEC is more then adequate (3dmp excluded)

HMM
well i have 4 ubecs sitting right here plugged in to any one of 601 gyros which is (4of them) i only get 4.8 volts( on screeen)
With the regulators and the lipo set up iam gettting 5.1 i really notice the differance when you start tossing it around HARD
I have done Tons of testing!!With becs and regulators ,5.1,5.4,6.0 volt stuff
Y ou should try it you might like it :dontknow
Maybe it it is just matter of opinion but i like how my machines perform Any ways back to bussines any body got Any reports on there 8880 Tanic packs??

i have the astro charger. i have been charging the thunder power packs at about 4.5c and had no problems. 1c takes about three hours per pack. it times out at one hour then i have to reset it. i am at 20.20 volts after 3 hours. seems long
thanks

OUCH!
i have been charging the thunder power packs at about 4.5c and had no problems. 1c takes about three hours per pack. it times out at one hour then i have to reset it.
You have to be missing something here?
If you charge a 5s4p pack at 1c you should be in the 6-8amp range depending on the cells.
If you are timing out after 1 hour then I am pretty sure you amperage is set too low on the 109. I would guess you are charging at like 2-3amps.
If you are REALLY charging at 4.5C then you are not doing it on an Astro. :D
They top out at 7.0amps on a good power supply.

Could you mean you are setting the charger to show 4.5?
If so that is 4.5amps and that would work fine although it is increasing your charge time by about 30 minutes I would guess from a completely dumped pack.

Make sure you understand C ratings before you go too much further with LiPo's. You can have a major accident if you are not careful..

Back to what Bobby said....
I am using a Tanic 2450 in my Fury on the new dual output Fromeco regulator and LOVE IT!

I am going to give a set of 8880's a try here soon as I get some funding.

What are you uinsg to run youre youre astro charger? it shouldnt time out
I run the Schulze 636 chargers 2 of them they are alittle$$ but well worth every penny

Jason
how is that new regulator? i haver herd about it isnt it 5.1 volts to gyro and 6volts to the rest?
I got 4 rx packs i have been working on one is a 2s2p 1660 whihc is very small and light and works well in the IONS then there is a 2s2p 2100 which is also small,2s2p3100 and a 2s2p 4440 i fly the 4440 in my extreme i can burn 3 gallons and only put back in 2500mah pretty cool. in the IONS iam getting around 8 flights with the little 1660 and i only have been putting in around 900 mah :banana

i have a optimum car battery and been charging my tp packs with it for a couple of months now with now problem. i think the charger is the 109. it is the green one. has the knob in the middle. i think i have been asking the question the wrong way sorry. how many amps can i put into the batteries when charging? i have been putting around 4.5-4.85 into the tp packs. is this to loo? can i go more. cause charging them takes a long time from a low pack.

thanks

Hjscm,

Yes you’re charging to low, it wont hurt anything but it takes forever. Hear is how you know how much amperage to charge at, 1C is the term used to describe the number of amps you will charge to fully charge a dead battery in one hour. An 8000mha battery is 8 amp hour, so it is an 8 amp battery, to fully charge it in one hour you will charge at 8amps, or for an 8800 = 8.8 amp = 1C charge rate of 8.8 amps. So your charger will only charge at 7 to 7.5 amps with five cells so you can turn it all the way up as high as it will go and it still wont be quite 1C but it will charge to full after a ten minuet flight in an hour to an hour & 10 minuets.

Now if you get a small model like a park flyer or small heli using a small Lipo battery you need to be careful not to over amp the thing. If your battery is 860mah then it is a .860 amp battery and the 1C charge rate for it is .860 amps, on your Astro this would be .85 amps :glasses2:

P.S. 1C=one hour charge rate is the highest safe rate to charge all your Lipos unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer :glasses:

Russ pretty much handle it there!! Thanks Russ :glasses:
I charge my 8880s @ 8 amps @ the feild when iam home i let them charge @ 4amps
Y ou can charge how ever you want as long as you dont go over 1c which would be 8.8 amps i think youre astro 109 only does 7amps no need to worry
Y ou can charge as low as 1amp if you want it will take forever like i said Russ pretty much gave you a quick run down on charging lipos

now that was exactly what i was looking for. thanks russ and bobby. i was always charging at about 4.5 to 4.85 amps. took over an hour when packs were low. but i usually only fly them till they get about 18 or so volts. then i would fly another bird while they charged and switch batteries.
thanks for the help guys. i think i need another ION
