I'm looking to get more power from my 30v2 with the upgrade idea, but can I just upgrade the motor for the power and skip the blade & longer boom, or does it really need that extra 100mm, I do figure i'll need strong servos for hoding power, just curious if anyone knows if i can get away with this shortcut, I have too many spare 550 blades and booms to just shelf 'em. Oh yea, I do already have the tail driven auto hub gear set in it now. Any info / insight is very appreciated. Thanks

You really need to change the gear ratio as well as the motor mount. The 50 uses an 85/10 = 8.5:1 (stock) or an 8.7:1 gear ratio. The 30 uses an 86/9 = 9.3:1 ratio.

I upgraded my original 30v2 to a 50 a couple of years ago and it flies great. From a pure mechanical standpoint you could fly the smaller blades and shorter boom if you wish. Tach your headspeed to be sure you aren't over driving those short blades. You might have to restrict your power, which sort of defeats the whole purpose for making the change.

I'm still using the same servos. I do the same maneuvers with the 50 as I did with the 30. Not much weight difference and no head geometry changes. I used Futaba 9252 in one and HiTec 5625MG in the other. Both setups work fine.

My advice: Save money on the servos and get the longer boom and blades. I guarantee you will notice a difference.

Hope this helps.

You know what, right now have used 15% nitro and i'm a super newbie to the whole nitro part of r/c, mabye the fuel might make more power, is 30% a real noticable difference?

Short answer = Yes. More power and smoother idle. You also have a broader needle valve range to work with (more clicks between too lean and too rich).

In fact, some of the newer engines, with their super huge carbs almost require 30 percent to run smoothly. My old OS 32 was very happy with 15 percent, but the newer OS 37 has a much bigger carb and would not run very well unless I fed it 30 percent.

BTW - funny you should ask about this conversion. I just picked up the latest RC Heli mag and they have a short article on upgrading from a 30 to a 50.

BTW #2 - my old OS 32 ran for almost twelve years in several 30 size helis. It was a great engine, the helis (Shuttle, 30v1, and 30v2) all flew very well. You can do some decent 3D with a 30. Mine would loop and roll with the best of them. I just had to be careful with collective and not slam the sticks around. My little 30v2 has now been converted to a 50, but I still have fond memories of the little 30.

Take care,

Ron

you can run the 50 in the 30 w/ the 550 blades and boom just be aware your going to have VERY low throttle curves.

I had a friend do this he changed mounts and gearing and his highest point was 68% on idle up 2
