All,

I am in the process of completing my Fury Extreme and wanted a little advice on gyro selection. I know that the GY601 is king of the hill - no dispute there, but was looking for a lower cost alternative. $350 is kinda hard to swallow for a gyro. I had a Fury Extreme before with a 401/9253 combo and it seemed pretty good. I guess my question is this - is the 401/9254 good enough for an Extreme? How about the JR500T or the CSM SL560, or the GY502 for that matter? If I have to, I will spring for the 601 - I'll just have to wait a little longer to get it.

Thanks,
Angelo

Angelo,
The 9254 servo will work well with the Extreme.
The GY 401, 502, JR 500GT, CSM 560 micro are all getting good reports.
Using any of those gyros above I would suggest the Futaba 9254 or JR8700G or one of the Airtronics fast digital servos for the tail.

If you decide to go with the GY601/9251 that is great combination also and will work well on any heli.

So far the 9254 with SL560 Micro looks best

closely followed by the 601, then 500T/9254 then 401 9254 combo's

The 560 and 601 are the tops tho

:D

Has anyone flown the JR 500T - how does it compare to the 401? Is it really better - I have heard bits and pieces about this gyro, but nothing consistent. Pricewise its about the same as the 401, so if it does perform better, than maybe i'll try it with a 9254 or 8700. Any 500T users care to comment?

Thanks,
Angelo

Angelo,

I have been flying the 500T using a 8700G servo for months now and I love it! I got one of the pre-production units to test out. I first put it in a Fury with many miles on it  to try it out. I found it very easy to set up and it hold better than my 401's do.
I started having an issue with a 401/9253 in my gas bird. These machines have a tremendous amount of torque and the 401 was really hard pressed to keep up. I installed the 500T/8700G in the gas machine ( I now fully trust the 500T) and it never flew better. It holds better than the 401/9253 combo.
The 500T has a very good sensor that is not affected by vibration, has a lot of authority and can be tailored for any flying style with a little understanding of how it sets up. The monster set up of JR gyros that the older 5000T had is now gone and this little gyro can be set up for any feel you like.

The 401/9253(4) combo can still be had for a little less than the 500T/8700G combo as the 500T is around $150 and the 8700G (I definitely recommend this servo) is still over $100, but is well worth the small additional cost. Henry Caldwell and Marcus Kim have now both flown my machine with this combo and are VERY surprised at it's feel and holding power.

The instructions for the 500T do however, leave a LOT to be desired. I have submitted a much more user friendly set of instructions to JR (which have not been implemented so far) to make this gyro as easy to set up as it really is.

If you decide to purchase the gyro or just want some more information on it, please feel free to send me an e-mail or PM.

Hope this helps!

John,

Thanks for the input on the 500T. I think it probably will suit me both price and performance-wise. I'll definitely contact you once I get it for setup tips. If you can also send me a copy of your instructions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Angelo

Yep i flew Johns gasser with that gyro. Man it does hold really well and does have a good constant pirro rate. His gasser does fly real well and the tail locks in. Thanks for the experience John.

Sure thing Marcus. You can fly it anytime! You made it look REAL good.
