I just got an HFX frame set I am going to modify in order to mount a 102P A123 system, problem is the batteries are 3 lbs!

RTF weight with no mount is 9 lbs.
add 1.5 lbs for camera (Evolt 500)
and 1 lb+ for the mount
I am close to 12 lbs.

Can the stock grip (metal) and head handle the 600 mm blades and the weight? or is this pushing too hard?

I don't know what my stock weight is with 6s2s lipo but stock rex handles my 5.5lb gasser mount without difficulties.

Not sure about those A123's though.

Hey Cryofix,
FWIW,
my setup weighs just under 13lbs ready to shoot. but i'm on 10s.

My setup has changed since then, including the addition of a Tango motor
I have flow many times with a HS of about 1800 rpm and so far the head is holding up just fine. I've even flown a bunch of times with the NHP 620 blades on and haven't had any problems. Also, there is one guy running 710s on a stretched trex using the stock head.
It is a concern for me too tho. but my biggest worry is the mount hanging from the little plastic LG mounts. those tabs are made to hold the heli up, not hang 4lbs of camera equipment from. I'm working on alum tabs like the logos use. something like this:

ANyway, hope this helps :)

I am going to custom design a front mount like the one DJ has in the past, I had too much trouble with the "Pendulum" effect on my logo 10 with the underslung mount I have.

I appreciate all your input on this guys, now do I convert the HFE frameset or the HFX frameset =) I got 9451's in the hfx and would hate to see them go to waste on an AP rig

Though not an AP rig, my Trex600 has an AUW of 11.7lbs. Im using the L motor, 75a ESC and a single 6S2P battery. I get about 5-8 minutes depending on which battery I use but there seems to be no abnormal wear or tear on the mechanics.

Why does your setup weigh nearly 12lbs Daniel?

I took the gimbal off the Askman and used it on a front mount. I have since changed the mount arms to carbon fiber. This front mount weight penalty is far less than the Askman, and works great.

Thunder Tiger MD530 (MD500) fuselage, painted over with civilian colors
ACT Labs Black Box telemetry recorder/video overlay device
RVMShop 2.4ghz wireless downlink
RCA Small Wonder digital video camera (essentially the CVS video camera- prehacked)

and all the little extra bits that make a scale heli look cool bring the all up weight to near 12lbs. I weighed it with the lighter of my lipo batteries. I suspect that with the AirThunder 5000mah, it would be right at 12lbs.

Yeah, i'm looking at getting a nose mount, but i'm still in the process of lightening my underslung. I'd get the HFE cause its lighter. It uses a simple servo arm setup, mini servos and has more room under the main gear for lipos. especially since your going a123.

Thanks guys.
I sacrificed good video equipment and good video quality for a fun ship. Its all a matter of priorities
