View Full Version : Tail rotor boom?
What is the half circle notch in the forward end of the tail rotor boom for?

With the non open tail rotor gear boxes. They have a tab on them that would slide into the notch on the boom. With the open gear box, the notch is not used so it is turned towards the front and is inside the boom clamps.

That was the notch for locating the older style tail rotor gearbox. They end for ended the boom and drilled new holes for the new gearbox.
I figured it wasn't used for anything and assembled it last night. Then I kept thinking about it and second guessing myself so I had to ask. :)

Anyone try a carbon boom? I know its not as stiff as the aluminum. I was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience.

Sure have. It will of course work, but is not as stiff. Whether or not it is an "Ultra" boom or not does not make a huge difference. You will see the tail boom pump up/down on spool up and the tail oscillations will actually show a bit. The aluminum is the way to go.

i am actually glad to see someone post this. i was wondering the same thing and was wondering if where the boom goes on the frames if there was some raised bump. Kind of like how a raptor 30/50 boom goes into the main frames. BTW since there is no raised bump for lining up how do you know you have your tail exactly lined up perfectly. By eyeing it?

Just eye ball it. Tighten the clamps securely.
