I just purchased a dx-7 transmitter with a 6100 receiver. Do I need to charge the receiver? I thought the receiver got it's power from the lipo. Also, what's the quickest way to determine if I have a mode 1 or a mode 2 transmitter. I bought it from todds models in the usa so I assume it's mode 2. I'm an extreme noob.......bear with me please.

no need to charge the rereceiver. I am always a little confused, but, if the throttle is on the left stick, then it's mode 2.

Since you bought your radio from a USA store, it should be a mode 2. That and IIRC mode 2 is throttle/collective and rudder on the left stick and aileron/elevator is the right stick.
As far as where the Rx gets its' power from, it depends on if you're flying a electric or nitro.
The electric models will transfer power through the ESC, while the nitros will need a battery and/or BEC to get power to the Rx.
But as far as the Rx goes, you should be fine with the 6100 as long as it has a sticker saying v.1.2 on it.
