After a decade of not flying planes (got out of the hobby for various reasons at the time), I finally got one of my planks flying again today.

So the story for those that are wondering what I am talking about...

After I won a new Rx at the clubs fly-in last week, I went to work getting my Right Flyer 60 ready to get back in the air again. I replaced the old (read ancient) Airtronics Rx/Tx/servos with Spektrum (DX7 Tx) electronics and set it up to the same as it was the last time I flew the plane (kinda hard to forget max throws physically allowed. lol).

Yesterday I started the engine for the first time since I placed the plane in storage. After a few tries it finally stayed running after the air tool oil I put in the engine at the time of storing, it finally was blown out. The engine ran like a top (I forgot how much power the Magnum 61 put out).:Bang

Anyways....

I took the plank out to the field today and had the most experienced pilot take it up to trim it for me to be on the safe side and let him fly it as much as he wanted after it was trimmed.

The next flight was all mine.

Between the very, very, very long gap between flights with the plank and the overcast sky, I was having a hard time keeping my orientation with the plank.

The first time I lost my orientation was over the "water treatment" pond near the field, and the second time was making a pass over the field (which scared myself and the other two there with me). which almost ended with a crash.

Needless to say, I was shaking like a leaf by the time I landed my plane.

Guess I was proved wrong with the ease I flew the planks on the sim. lol

Yeah, it definately takes some time, I was out of planes for about 4 years, and had to get back up with an instructor, but it comes back really quickly.
Just dont fly the 1/4 scale extra 330L, with the 160 twin gas engine, until you are ready:lol:

the older you get the more rusty you get, I am 27 and have gotten out and back into it over the past 19 yrs, along with my father who is in his 60's, i always pick it back up like its nothing, this last time his high speed plane was a little much for him but not for me..

I believe that!

The last time I flew the plank, I was about 25ish and my reflexes/eyes were a lot better than they are now.

Lucky for me, I was flying my Right Flyer 60 and not my Hots profile. lol

But I was thinking about that flight earlier today and was thinking that maybe the slow servos that came with my DX7 might have had a little to do with things getting scary. :dontknow

slow servos? the digital ones are slow? My mini serovs that came with mine that I put in the heli do not seem slow. hum.

Well, for comparison, the DS285s in my Rex are noticeably faster than the DS821s that came with my DX7.

It seems like it takes almost a full second for the 821s to make a full movement. For example, it looks and feels like that long of duration for the throttle to move from idle to full throttle, and all control surfaces have the same servo on them.

But then again, on a 10+ year old plank that might be a good thing. lol
