I just finished my 550EP and was trying to get to hover, I use 2x 2100MHZ 20C and i was barely able to get it off the ground. Seems like the head speed is way to low and it was trying real hard to hold a hover. When i got the kit i noticed that the Motor had some rust on the shaft and did not think anything about it. I did take the Heli to my LHS and the guy there went thru it for me and said that he did not see anything wrong with the set up. The radio needed to be adjusted but that was it. This heli is stock. My 450 has a faster head speed and the ones i have seen and even flown has a higher head speed. Any input would be great ...

The headspeed on my stock 550 (kv850) is a lot slower than my trex 450. I think the stock is like 1700. Mine does lift off with no problems. Sure you have enough pitch ? I have +/- 10 and I left off at about 5/8 throttle stick.

As for the rust, mine also had a little on the motor shaft.

Hate to ask silly questions but you have connected your batteries in series not parallel havent you?

Yes, in series, i have a Y cable and i use that for the battery's, I tryed a differnt set of battery's last night with the same results, struggling to get off the ground, Is there a certian way that the ESC and motor wires are to be hooked up, The motor has the 3 Black wires comming from it and the ESC has 3 color wires, and not sure if thats even right the way i have it put together. I was told not to adjust the ESC and just to leave it alone, but i have read here at HF that some have made adjustments to the ESC. I followed Bob's videos during the build. I have also noticed that the ESC and Motor get warm after about 3/5 minutes of trying.

check your throttle curves, and do a throttle setup on your ESC. Mine was fine stock but you might need to go thru setup to get your radios end points. It should fly fine, i even used a old set of my Trex 1800mah packs which flew fine (except the got hot fast) I use a straight idle up of 100% throttle, and my normal curve is fairly high as well, probably like 0 35 70 85 100

Slipping pinion on the motor?

I set my throttle curve and pitch curve the same as Fin uses on the Trex 450 video. I think its called Curves 101. The three black wires on the motor go to the three color wires on the ESC. Order does not matter. If the motor turns backward, just reverse any two of the three wires on the motor where it connects to the ESC. What size batteries are you using ?

On both normal and idle up, mine shoots up like a rocket if you give it full collective. Can you take a closeup pic of your heli and post it here ? Also, make sure your blades are at 0 pitch when at center throttle stick.

Hi, I live in Bogotá, Colombia (high: 2,600 m / 8,530 feet) and faced the same trouble, I found out that I had the Pitch curve a little low, so I increased it to -3/+10 and solved the problem.

the Pinion has 2 set screws, i will run thru the head set up again and chk the pitch curve's. i will follow Bob's videos THX for the help

I have reset the pitch on the Heli and reset the throttle curves with the same result. i did find that the ball links on the pitch linkages where backwards. Just seems like the heli labor's trying to get it off the ground. i have full travel with the swash plate but it just dont want to do it. the pitch is set now to -3/+8

Can you get ur pitch to +10 ?

I had a similar problem once and it was a esc setting. If your packs are ordinary and not charging properly and your esc battery protection setting is set on high it can activate the the soft cut and decrease power.
I am not familiar with the Gaui esc as i am running a HV set up , but some esc you have to tell it how many cells you are running. So if it is set up for 8s and you run 6s it can see the pack as being flat and again going into low voltage battery protection.
The other thing is do you have a free driveline. Is your motor mesh not to hard? Is your belt tension not excessive? Have you acidentally double twisted tour tail belt.?
if you are getting 10 degrees pitch idont think this is your problem.

Check your battery output voltage with a multimeter . And check your radio throttle atv are on 100% each way ,reset up a linear throttle curve ie 0 ,25,50/75,100then, re program your esc so it knows your radio stick posi hi and low points. If this is not right then copying all the throttle curves from other people will do you no good as their is no reference points for your esc to work from .

Hope you get it sorted

First off, I want to say thank's to everyone with there help. I went back the LHS and they tested the heli, with my batterys and there's. same issue. they tryed to reset the ESC but was not able to. The Heli is under warranty with them and i had to leave it there for repairs. The pitch is set right, linkages and belt tightness. I think i just got a bad part in the box and they are going to fix it.We still dont know what is the bad part, ESC or Motor and as soon as i know i will post just for an FYI. I think its the ESC
