I think I read somewhere that there is a way to remove residues (such as from castor oil based fuels) from engine parts. My recollection was that you boiled it in some solution...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Anti Freeze will do it. Leave it to soak
Safer solution is to use a washing powder solution. Place the parts in a boilng sauspan of the stuff for 1/2 hour

Go to a yard sale or Thrift store in your area. Find an old crock pot that works. Buy it, bring it home and fill it with antifreeze. Do this outside, run some power to the pot and turn it on. Let engine parts sit in boiling antifreeze overnight. They will be like new when you remove them.

Do not use the crock pot for anything but the above. Also dispose of the left over antifreeze. Do not leave the antifreeze where pets or wildlife might drink it.

Thanks so much for the replies! I'll try this as soon as I get some anti-freeze!

OK. I took out the crankshaft and bearings. I also took off the carb. Should I dissassemble the carb? Are there pieces that I shouldn't put in the boiling anti-freeze? I found a few rubber o-rings--should those stay out of the soup?

btw. I'm trying to clean a OS-37sz...if that matters.

Thanks again for the tips!

You should only put bare metal parts in the antifreeze. I would not put the whole carb in, only the housing.

Also, make sure it is the old green antifreeze. The new environmentally friendly stuff doesn't work as well.

And cook it on low, you dont need high heat.

And quit using fuel with castor oil. Synthetic oil is just as good or better.

What about brake cleaner? I've used it on the external surfaces of my OS 50 and it makes it look like new.

Or you could buy a can of Demon Clean and have it sparkly in 30 minutes.

Dawn Power Disolver. I've used every method listed and this one tics off the wife the least and works fast. Spray on and brush off under running water 20mins later. The wife uses it on cookware.
