View Full Version : Fan hub\Clutch driver spacing?
The manual show the space between the top of the fan hub and the clutch driver will be around .020". Mine is much smaller about .007". Is this OK?

The spacing tool that is supplied in the kits is .035 thick. I use a feeler gauge and set the spacing usually in the .020 to .030 range.
.007 should be fine as long as no metal to metal contact is taking place that might cause interference. Also when the motor heats up the gap is going to get smaller due to the expansion of parts from the heat.
David
How would I go about attempting to increase this gap?

I have not built a Spectra. But in the other models the motor can be adjusted vertically. If the gap is fixed in the Spectra, then I would not think there is a problem with it. I have not heard of any problems with the spacing.
Can be the motor be slid up and down vertically?
David
I don't think it can be adjusted vertically. Possibly I didn't fully seat the fan to the output shaft of the motor? I thought I tightened down as ar as possible.

Hello Dash,
I have the same things.
1,5 month ago I asked Carey about that.
This is what he suggest me
"
the short term answer is to place 4 #0003 washers under the two ladder braces (between the ladder brace and the bottom plate). This will space the motor slightly and won't cause any issues.
You can also contact the shop, Tim is going to re-cut part#125-43 out of a thinner material, which will resolve this permanently. Since this plate is simply sandwiched in, it will be easy to replace.
"
I have contact Tim about that but he never answer me.
Whatever since I still have a space between the cluch and fan I will do nothing.
Patrick
patet,
Thanks for the suggestion. What is the spacing on yours?

Tim did not like the idea of spacers and suggested shim material over that. In fact, he really didn't like that idea and was going to go with the thinner space plate. Since I needed a fix right then, I went with the shim material cut to the size of the vertical bracket bottoms (sandwich between the bottom plate. Funny thing is that when I flipped the motor to forward facing, I had enough spacing to where I didn't need them. hmmmmm.

What is considered a safe gap size?

patet,
Thanks for the suggestion. What is the spacing on yours?
Dash,
I do not really know what space it is now. But it is very very very close.
After each fly I check to see if I can still see the space. I things it will not coming closer. The most important is that the 2 peaces do not touch each other.

Mine was so close that it was having metal to metal contact. I just added 4 flat washers I had left from the build between the braces and bottom plate.

Now the std spacer slides snugly in between the stack. ;)
Do you think using those washers is going to effect the structural integrity of the heli?
Is this a Miniature Aircraft approved fix? I would hate to do this and then have something fail?

NO.......Have you SEEN the base plate. The upper brace is metal.

Hey Nolan,
I think you would be alot better off getting a piece of metal the rite thickness, the same length and width as the bottom of upper brace...using just those washers won't be near as rigid, theres just not enough surface area making contact!!!
Cheers

I think your correct but I built it on the kitchen table in a TDY apartment and materials that met the right thickness for the fan spacing are limited. The washers are very close to the same diameter as the thickness of the brace.
I'm more worried about the dinky socket head bolts that go thru the base plate to the brackets shearing than I am about the washers. :D

could place a small carbon plate instead of a piece of metal.
Should be ok as well no? what do you thinks ?

Nolan,
Do you know a LAR named Dan O'Connor? He's working out at Irwin. If you know him, tell him his God Son say's hey.
It's been a looooong time since I was at China Lake, way back in '81, D Trp 2/9 CAV.
Regards,
Pete

Hi Pete,
Sorry to say I don't know Mr O'Connor. Funny that in 18 years of doing this job I haven''t been to Ft Irwin. I have some co-workers that have.
I believe since you were here last the place has grown a lot but it's still pretty limited in conveniences. :)

Just a shot in the dark. It's sometimes a very small world. Take care.
