Bottom mount motor and front mount lipo like the 600, that is not that desireable imho. Really wish they had taken the top motor and lipo on the bottom in frame approach....

I'm with ya on that one. I kinda like the layout of the E-raptors but I would much rather have the Align head.

Well, I guess that's were aftermarket frames will have to come in...

If they dont hurry up and get this out, there will be an after market Trex500 :)

Well they were beaten to market by the 3DX/HDX500 and now the RCT-500 "SPECTRE" is out (with bottom, rear mounted motor and a battery cage in the front of the lower frame): http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692231&goto=newpost

2008 is going to be an interesting year in the 500-class :)

That RCT-500 looks very impressing... wonder if the T-Rex 500 can top that.

Assuming the Align 500 comes out in the short-mid term, it will have the edge over many competitors by way of it's mature distribution network. All else being equal, I want a heli that I can easily and cheaply get parts for.

Now naturally flight characteristics will vary - it will be interesting to see how these 500s perform relative to each other - that will be a true test. I want a high performance 500, not a sedate sport flyer.

Wierd... I just got told that we really wont see this heli until beginning of the year. From a GOOD source too (Align)!

We are in October now and getting kits in production and parts on the street I am pretty sure is going to take longer than a month. 2-4 weeks for testing means if all testing goes well with NO CHANGES needed (rare), they would have most of November and December to get it out. I dont see that happening..... Sure some pilots and a select few might get some but I dont the masses will see it this year.

Bob

I'd say that's about spot on. To me the fact that the only "pictures" we've seen are 3D CAD models tends to indicate that the real thing probably doesn't exist yet. I'd imagine that they have pretty much finished the design but are currently getting tooling made for any plastic parts. The talk of tests in coming weeks probably indicates that the first off tool samples will be done soon and they will be putting some pre-production prototypes together for flight testing. From there they will possibly have to make some small refinements and take care of manufacturing issues that crop up before going into production late in the year for deliveries early next year. The canopy is probably already done because it would be one of the simplest tools to make.

its align, as long as the price is reasonable it is gonna be a huge hit. Quality is always excellent, and parts are always dirt cheap and available literally everywhere.

Some pictures of the real thing has just been posted on the trex forums

Ya know, it looks like its gonna be just the right size. Big enough that you can get real stable flight a good autos and small enough that you wont need a soccor field to fly in.

Looks like a Trex 600 head. Canopy looks cool though. Not too impressed so far.

looks awesome, can't weight. if it uses 9650s for cyclic then there isn't much option to go. whats hard is that the 500 size is very difficult to do b/c there aren't many products in the market compatible with this size and thus everything must be made from scratch. the blades and the cyclic servo choice concern me.

Existing shipping products in the 500 class include the Lepton, QJ-EP8, HDX500 and 3DX500. There are wooden, FG and CF blades from around 380mm to 435mm to serve these helis so far. However certainly not as much choice as for either the smaller or larger classes at the moment.

The RCT-500 has been notionally released and I believe is due to start customer shipments in a month. Other 500-class helis announced and expected this year include the SJM-500, and Dragonus500. This explosion of new entrants to the 500-class, and the entry of Align, will stimulate a lot more interest from the after-market vendors and I think we will see the range of component choices evolve quickly.

Most of the existing helis in this class support either HS81/85 servos (or similar) or some have specific support for S9650 servos. Not a big range of choices but if these work, do we need lots of alternatives ? Hitec's digital version of the HS85 should be out soon for those looking for even higher performance.

Don't forget to add Vibe 500 to the list which is due out in spring 2008!

And don't forget the Logo 500 either. It certainly is a segment of the market that is exploding. It's filling the gap between $100 battery packs and $300 battery packs - lots of room there. The time is ripe for 500 class helis.

****** - what were you expecting? It's certainly larger. What were you hoping to see that isn't there (besides the tail assembly!)?

I was hoping that it would be a bit different looking than the Trex 600. The head looks identical.

I think the head design is the same for the 450 and 600 and now the 500 and maybe the 700, I ask the question a while back if this is the best head design out there, but no one replied?

I would like to know?

Don't doubt about that. You can see the result of all professional 3D pilots. The head is fine.

I don't even worry about the servo's. They is choice and there will be much more soon.

The thing I worry about is the ESC (and built-in BEC). First thing I hope they produce a ESC with an built-in BEC that delivers enough peak current. But they probably produce a ESC without a BEC. The other thing I hope for is they produce an ESC that has a great govener.

Anyway... whatever it has, I just can't wait! I'm 100% sure I will buy a T-Rex 500.

blade wise, you know when align comes out with this 500 Vblades and Radiz will almost certainly come out with somthing. That area doesnt bother me, servo wise, Im hoping to use 9650's.
im very interseted

From my point of view, that's a good thing. If it is exactly the same design as the 450 and 600, then it'll be great; if it offers some adjustment, it'll be even better. And you know Align, if it's not right, they'll fix it quickly.
