View Full Version : Newbie thinking of getting a HONEYBEE 2 (all inputs welcome)
Hi my name is Paul and this is my very first time in getting in this hobby and i wanted some one opinion first. Are the mini RC choppers difficult to fly and are they stable enough to hover indoors?

They are more difficult to fly then bigger heli's, but once you master a small one the bigger ones become more easy to fly. Also you can fly them in you living room.

I agree with Jetta. Try a simulator if you dont have one. :)

Simulator FIRST then a 30 or 50 nitro size heli. You won't need the training gear if you use the flight sim so don't waste the money. ;)
Thank you for your input, I believe i will do just that and get me a sim. Thanks

Believe us it will. Simulators are priceless. I got a simulator before I got my first heli, it was the right decision. :)

I have a honeybee and enjoy it. Though I wish I had my sim running. It would have certainly saved me buying a few replacement parts. Just do not try to fly on a windy day. Ain't gonna happen. 8)
The kind of cool thing about them is there are many heli's made along the same design so they are many ways to obtain replacement parts and some really cool aftermarket items. The are quite a few anodized aluminum parts for them now.
Oh one more thing... Training gear is your friend (from a novices perspective). I tried without in the beginnning and got absolutely no where. Things improved 100% when I started using the training gear.

If I may be so bold sir!
I have 6 honeebee2s and I love em, :noteworthy I spool up my trexers here and there every now and then Inside my house. but its too nerve wrecking, the honeebees on the other hand are like my lab, in home creatures.
one thing though if you have wireless cams don't fly near them :arggg:

I am flying a honeybee 2. I can fly well in the simulator ,and a lot of fan tell me the real heli is much harder than simulator. But I don't think so, i feel it almost the same. Now i can inverted fly with honeybee 2,but can not do the other 3D move, beause of the honeybee is poor in tail hold.
Thank you everyone for the wonderful info. :)

Paul,
I had been flying glow planes for about 20 years and decided get my first helicopter and went with a HB2. In my opinion the HB2 is the way to get into helicopters. I have had a great time with it. Now I am landing in 10-15 mph winds nose in, doing 540 stall turns, 4 point hovering in my garage, and the latest thing is flying figure 8's around trees under the bottom branches. It is a blast. Now, I will say that I have crashed it several times but it is very easy to fix and the parts are very cheap so there is no reason to be scared of flying it.
A little stick time on a simm and then you will be ready to start bunny hopping with the HB2. In no time you will be hovering.
I converted the tx to my Futaba 9C but it is not necessary. I created a list of upgrades and fixes that I recommend. If you are interested I will email you the document.

The Blade may be a little easier to fly with out the bell hiller head. The HB CP2 has the bell hiller head and it is an upgrade for the Blade. I have the HB CP2 and like it but it is a bit quick for learning on. I started with a FP.
That said if you compare the two with the Blade having all the upgrades that the HB comes with (Lipo, charger, bell hiller head, symmetrical blades). With the Blade at ~ $220 plus all the mods, and the HB CP2 at ~$180. The HB CP2 is more than $150 cheaper. They are virtually the same most parts are interchangeable.
I would buy heat sinks with the HB CP2 (about $5) and install them before you fly it.
I wish I could have 6 of them then I could keep one flying while I work on my T-Rex.
Favorite mods. Heat sinks, super skids, DD tail.

I have never flown a HB2 so I am not advocating it one way or the other, but if anyone is planning on buying one, there is a complete kit with radio, controller, gyro, etc on hobby lobby's crash sale today for $99. I'm not that fond of these small brushless guys (I WILL STICK WITH MY T-REX), but if you can fly already and want something cheap this is an option.

Thanks for the info, I'm currently flying one of these great entry-level helicopters. It is the best bang for your buck, you can't go wrong.
This helicopter will take alot of abuse during a crash, straighten out the blades, ck all the links, pop that little sucker back into the air! Are we having fun yet?
BTW this is a full "brushed"(tail & main) motor helicopter.
Happy flying to all
