I've been rebuilding a used EB. I'm the third owner. I put a dial indicator on the tail output shaft and have 7 thousands runout at the tip. I think I accounted for any misreading due to bearing play by putting my thumb on the brass sleeve on the inboard part of the shaft as I turned it and took readings. I think it is safe to say that 7 thousands requires a new shaft. What do you think is acceptable run out at the tip of the shaft?

.000 is acceptable. But as you said, if you check it in the bearings you will have runout due to the play.

If the output shaft is bent, check the tail hub as well.

Oh yea, it's bent too. I'll be calling you for a couple of nice zero run out shafts. Thanks Chris.
