I believe it is design to work together
One has the small wires facing left and right and the other facing forward and back to give 360 degree of reception
I don't believe it will work without the small secondary one attached

I had a problem with the DX7 connection to the RA7000 Receiver. It turned out that the "sub-receiver/antenna" had come unplugged. My advice is to keep it plugged in!

The higher the frequency the more sensitive the receiver is.
the phasing of the antenna is quite crytical.
What you have with the remote receiver is a chance to even out the dead zone from the first receiver by placing them at 90 degrees to each other.
(remember when they track animals with transmitters, the best signal is straight from the transmitter with the receiving antenna pointing at it {ie loudest beeps})
Now if your transmitter antenna is near horizontal (as it usually is with a DX7) then place both receivers horizontal.(do not have the ends of the antenna too close together.
On each receiver the antennas need to be inline and straight for max reception. This is actually a dipole antenna.
Then it does not matter in which direction the model faces, one or the other receiver will get a good signal.
this is a simple explanation of the interaction.
