took my hawk pro for its maiden voyage, went well till I checked the head temp...almost 410,woah. its a used bird from a local heli nut, well taken care of,nice bird...I'm using magnum 30%,there is nothing binding causing resistance,so why the hi temp....? this is my first nitro bird, but I'm not new to nitro's,I've been racing nitro in just about every land based vehicle you can think of....so do I just need to fatten her up..? she had a nice smoke trail ,and it seemed to have good power(have nothing to gauge against). any info would be great!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for lookin'

How quiet is the fuel in the tank - if it is foaming in the hover, then you are too lean on the idle/hover screw (NOT THE MAIN NEEDLE) or on both the main and the screw.

wow didn't know there even was a idle/hover screw......Maybe it was foolish of me to assume that the procedure was the same for helis. land based nitros I've always been pretty darn good at tuning,Guess its time to put my thinking cap back on!!!!!

it sounds to me that it might be to lean on the low end needle try opening it just 1/8 of a turn at a time fly it set it down and check temp , repeat till your happy but some motors will runn at a diffrent temp the os .32 that i have in my hawk runs from 280 degs to 360 degs just deppends on how hot or cold it is outside and what humidity it is , its been running since i broke it in about a year now of run time on it ,

check out this page

http://www.helihobby.com/html/two_stroke_engine_tuning.html

also if the heli has been sitting for a while ( ie over a month or two it will run hot till it burns the junk out of it from sitting , may be 3 or 4 tanks to do it )

and as for the term hover/idle screw = some call it that but its the low end adjustment on the side with the link to put the clevis on

You guys run your engines too hot. I wouldn't go over 240 myself. And that is with no reserve...

Just stick you finger on the backplate and see if you can hold it there for 5 seconds.

and your motors are most likely rich as hell too

there is no set temps that these motors run at every motor is diffrent

and getting the temp from the back plate is useless due to by the time the heat has reached the back plate it has cooled the only real place to take the temp from is right at the glow plug and and that will rtell you the true temp that your motor is running
