View Full Version : 1000 W Upgrade Motor Caution

I recently upgraded my stock motor to the new 1000 Watt, 1100 kv upgrade motor (H/18/11H). A few minutes into the maiden flight, I suddenly lost power and brought it in for a hard landing (luckily I only broke the skids...need to practice some more autos ). The front main gear was stripped, and the motor pinion was completely out of alignment with the main gear (below it by about a centimeter). At first, I thought the pinion had slipped down, but upon closer inspection, I found that the motor shaft itself had slipped down. I found that there were two grub screws that were missing from the top area of the motor (see picture below). I suspect that these missing grub screws were what allowed the shaft to slip out.

The stock motor has two grub screws in this location. I was able to put the motor in a vice and gently ease the shaft back into place and I secured it with two spare grub screws I had. Hopefully the motor will still work...I'll try and test it soon.
If you have this motor, I suggest you inspect it carefully to make sure that these grub screws are in place and loctited before you fly it again.

Ouch, I will be checking mine at lunch, hopefully all will work out for you as I just love this motor.
FYI, my maiden only lasted about 3 seconds, my main gear stripped on lift off as soon as I hit idle up. I was using the old gear, it has been just fine with the "ok" gears. No wear at all. but i will be ordering the Revco gears and a 22 or 21t pinion. since I really need a stock 13t pinion with this motor and it is not availible.

Yeah...I was actually very happy with it - while it lasted

It is a chance that you have land whithout power. Personnaly I have upgrade my hurricane with a z power z 20 980 t/v. It is a powerfull engine and no problem after 20 flights.

zjuggler - what batteries are you using with this motor? THANKS for the heads up on this!!
I was thinking of trying that motor out - but I am not sure it will play nice with my 20c 2200 HXT batteries.
I am wondering if I need to stick to the stock 850kv motor for these batterys. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would love to hear them!
Thanks - Brent

Brent,
I am using the Evo 2500 25c packs and get 4.5 minutes of hard flying. I also use a set of Evo 2170 25 c Packs and get about 3.5 minutes and don't fly them as hard, and they are warm 150 degrees. with the stock motor I was getting 6 minutes from both sets (I could get longer with the 2500's but to lazy to reset my timmer) I am selling one new set of 2170's since they really don't work well with this motor. I don't think the 2200 20C packs will work well with it but I did though use 20c 1800 packs once with the stock motor which was ok for 4 minutes.
I am using the stock gearing and feel I have plenty of head speed. I believe this motor would be perfect with a 13T pinion which is not availible. So I will probably try the revco gears and I am hoping this will bump flight times to 5 minutes or better and might keep pack temps down on the 2170's.

I usually run a pair of Air Thunder 3S 2200's, and occasionally a pair of Flight Power 3S 2170's. (I fly a trex 450 as well, and I like being able to fly the batteries on either). The flight times are on the short side, even with the stock motor, but at least I know that going in.
I know I'll get shorter flight times with the upgrade motor, but I really enjoyed the boost in power while it lasted!

ON my Zpower Z 20 980, i use two 2100 20 C. The consomption with 15 pignon teeth is 13 A in stationary and 23 A at full trottle. My pitch curve is -2 +5 +10 and -10 +5 +10 in iddle. My throttle curve is 0 25 50 75 100 and 100 75 50 75 100 in iddle.
The advantage of this engine is also the fan, after a fly he is cold not like the stock engine when after a fly is very hot.

I took a closer look at my motor and it is acctually diffrent? What ready heli sent me is a RCP 1000kv 35/18/11, not a 1100kv, although they look about identicle?

Hello badriM,
iam very interested in this motor z20 kv980 engine. Which headspeed do you have with 15 pinion at 100% throttle? Do you feel this engine is much stronger than the stock motor KV850?

Dear Timmey,
The head speed is arround 2200 t. Z Power are good electric motor. I have three of them and have never have any problems.
If you have any question it is always pleasure to answer
You can see a digital photo of it in my hurricane

badriM - what kind of flight times are you getting out of that setup?
What batteries are you using?
Thanks - Brent

In 3d the flying time with this setup is 5 min with 2 x 2100 3s. In mix flying, cool and hard you can fly 7 min.
