i just got my xes and im trying to buy everything else i need to complete it. not sure what type of servos to use. does anyone have any recomendations as to what type? brand ,size, model #, digital or analog? dont really want to spend hundreds on servos but just want to get a decent set that will performe well and that will last? also should i use metal gear servos like i have in my trex?(hs65mg's) i would like to stick with either futaba or hitec brands. thanks

I'm using three of the DS821s that came with my DX7 for cyclic (as are a lot of other people). Tail is a 401/9254 combo.

i would like to use either a futaba or hitec servo. i have had very good luck with them in the past and would like to stay with those two.

I use s3151 and the s3152 is also an option. The best servos you can get for the lowest price in my opinion. With some extra frames you could also fit some 9650s.

I have the Hitec 645MG servos for cyclic. It is about $35/each and have so much more torque than the JR/DS821 servo.

I have not flown mine yet, but am very happy with the Hitec 56HB, 65, and 65MG servos on the other 3 TRexes that I have.

I am almost embarresed to say but I am running some old JR 537 std servos. I had these on hand and was going to use them to test fly. well here I am 2 months later and still using them. I had planed on going the ds821 route, but not sure i want to use Digi's do to power consumption,I might also go the hitec but i have also had good luck with the Futaba 9404's. but the ds821 are real hard to beat for the price!

does the speed on these servos seem ok?
Speed 6.0V 0.18 sec

Yes, speed is plenty fast. I don't think any of us can notice anything difference between 0.18 sec and 0.25 sec for 60 degrees rotation except the hardcore 3D'er.

Cheers,

whats the diffrence of the 60 degrees and any other # of degrees?? whats the benefit of the degrees more or less than 60?

It's all realtive; some mfgs specify the speed of a servo over 45 deg while others do this at 60 deg (most do btw). Strictly theoretical, a 0.18s/60deg servo would do 0.135s/45deg. The actual speed will differ slightly due to the regulation process of the servo postition where acceleration/decelleration comes to play a factor.
But as stated; hardly anyone can tell the difference between 0.18 and 0.25sec/60deg

since this thread is about servos for the hurricane, i was wondering if it would be ok to use the standard DS821 digital servos from the spektrum DX7 pack for learning with? I'm really new to heli's so i'm not exactly going to notice the high tech servos from the low tech ones :) But if it's not ok as a servo for the tail, what's a good servo under $100?? for pricing reference since i'm not in america...a futaba 9254 costs $175 and a futaba s3152 is $85 here in australia. (sux living here, everything heli is expensive!!) thanx guys/gals

regards,
Matt

Matt - you want to come and live in England - prices for heli stuff is sky-high, and it rains 364 days a year :(

We're OK at rugby though

The simple answer is "yes, even on the tail for learning". At some stage you might outgrow the DS821 on the tail and if that happens, you can look for something better at the time. IMO there is a lot of overkill in advice about gyros and servos for learners. Getting the very best is nice and less likely to need replacing on performance grounds, but using what you have or can afford can work just fine too, especially for a beginner learning. I started with a GY191 piezo gyro and slow HS65 on the tail of my TRex450 and it did just fine for a long time. Even now I just have an HS81 because I am still not into 3D and may never be, so it does all I need.

I'm using DS821s on a high performance Hurri 550 and they are fine for cyclic. Yes I've got a 9254 on the tail but I think for learning you could use the 821 and it should be OK for hover / FF and probably FFF.

Agree totally Ken, it always makes me laugh when I here beginners like myself worrying about the odd millisecond here or there

I am using what I can afford for a start. Futaba 3001 on cyclic. AU$21.95 each I bought them for at the local hobby shop (I live in Aus), and this seems to be the going rate. I thought they wouldn't be nearly strong or accurate enough for this heli, but they have turned out fine for learning (and was cheap to replace when I crashed that time and stripped a gear in one......). I stress that I fly right side up and easy, though. A Futaba 9254 came with my gyro in the heli kit, so I used that on the tail. It seems to be matched to the gyro 'cause it works flawless.

I'm using 3001s as well - also still learning

Matt,

I am looking to run the following servos, possibly even one on the tail. Unless anyone has had bad experience with these? Cheap enough to have a few as backup just incase.

ditto even on the tail :-) Also only using a cheapish Telebee (align) gyro still ample for my abilities after 37 flights...will upgrade tail servo in not to distant future happy with the gyro though :-)

It sounds as if w have similar specs - I also use the Telebee, but I have a 3151 for the tail, the 3001s are just on the cyclic for me
