I'm hearing rumor that there are problems with the tail gears on the Spectra G. Anyone have some insight on that?

I know MA is in the process of changing the tail rotor output shaft hardening process. That's the reason I can't get my Spectra fully repaired and back in the air... the new shafts aren't done yet. :arggg:

Do you think that is what is taking mine so long to get here? I ordered from my local hobby shop almost 2 weeks ago.

My understanding is that no new kits are shipping until the new tail rotor shafts are finished and inserted in the kits.

What will be the next part they have to re-do?
Will owners of earlier kits get the 'new improved' shaft?

Should the gears be replaced by MA for the people that have the spectra G already? I have been waiting for a TRM 231 since Jan. 14 and have not finished my kit yet. :arggg:

Nothing wrong with the tail gears. The tail rotor output shaft is being remade for the Spectra. The hardness of the shaft is being changed is the only difference.

Is it safe to fly with the original output shaft?

That will have to be your decision. There has been a couple of Spectra's I have heard about that the tail out put shaft broke off outside the bearing on the tail blade side. But with that being said, there is also a bunch of Spectra's flying that have not had a problem. Maybe it was a fluke that those two failed. But MA decided to look at the hardness of the shaft and change it some.
There has already been a large number of the open gear boxes sold and put in service. I have only heard of the shaft problem with those couple on a Spectra.

There are plenty of Spectras flying with the original tail shafts. Johns has done a huge amount of HARD 3D and no trouble at all with anything. Mine is still flying with the original output shaft to.

Mine has original. But I'm only into the third gallon on it.

It would be nice to know what type and length tail blades were involved with the failures. This may be a big part of the stress on the shaft.

Do we have to call MA for the tail gear shaft recall (is it even a recall?) or do we just assume that they'll send everyone who has sent in their registration and warranty to automatically received any recalls? This is my first MA helicopter so I am not sure how MA goes about part recalls.

Do the smart thing... call MA.
Good luck.

Had my tail shaft fail inflight as i was hovering ....Nothing has been done to this heli to have this happen...I cant even do much else besides a roll and loop and i wont even do it with the spectra yet as i am to afraid to crash...All i was doing was hovering today and had sudden tail control loss ...this heli has been babied...no reason for this to fail other than it was not strong enough to start with. could have been real bad if i was high or in a turn..

:bomb: :bomb: I was there when this happen to rc-outlaw and could not believe it. Thank goodness he was not very high or could have been a bad story. I'm still putting my spectra together waiting on an engine. For the price of this heli I think its time for MA to step up to the plate and make all the wrong's right. :arggg: :arggg:  :bomb:
Will be calling Tim at MA early Monday morning.

MA is already addressing this problem witch is know on the Spectra-G, I don’t know if the new shaft is in house yet but they have been ordered from there vender for a week or two. Try to go easy on Tim and his crew, they did much testing on this product before release and did not experience this problem. Be civil to them and you will get all that you hope for in the way of service/satisfaction.

Sad to not being able to fly a new heli for at least 2weeks, if/when sending the tailbox in...

Tim and MA are addressing the problems. The prototype got thrashed for over 5 months with a hot TRM 231 with no failures at all. Out of the MANY Spectras sold, only a handfull have had any issues at all. When a scenario like this happens, it takes a little time to iron it out.
The bottom line is that you guys with Spectras are flying the most advanced and forward looking MA machine ever produced with the fewest parts. Be patient a little longer and you will be satisfied.

Im sure they´ll take care of everything, but as you know I live on the opposite side of this planet (from Florida that is), so it will take some time to send it to them, having it fixed, and then having it sent back :(
I wanna fly my new Spectra, my TRM seems to run better and better for each tank.

:D Called MA this morning and was told to send in for the updates (shaft and gears). Will have to wait till they get there parts in. :arggg: I would rather wait for them than crash if you know what i mean. Hope there engines come in soon. Said it would be before end of March. Then have to send to toxic Al.

I was reading about this issue on RR and the news was all spectra's should have the open tail gearbox sharfts and gears replaced. Apparently if you send in your gearbox they will be done under warranty as soon as parts are available.
