General wisdom is to push the gain up UNTIL it starts to wag, and then bring it down a couple of percentage points until the wag is gone.
That will probably be too much gain. The Spartan doesnt quite work that way e.g. it doesnt wag easily in a hover. I noticed I had too much gain when doing backwards stuff not when I was in the hover. I would start with about 35%.

Hello, I received my 2nd spartan today. I already had a spartan 760 a month ago for my Trex500. this one is for my Trex450V2.
As usual, I follow up finless video to setup this gyro on my 450V2. After the initial setup is completed. I power up my heli then find that my gyro LED lights would goes off by iteself. then after a couple of second it will on again.
Should I contact my local hobby shop to replace a new one?
I tape it on video. after I power it on, I have not touch anything. just waiting the LED goes off. I also check out my other spartan on my trex500. I wait 4 mins, the LED never goes off.
7s : Power on
1:23s : the LED off.
1:30s: the LED on.
1:38s : LED off again
1:45s: LED on
1:54s: LED off

Does the rudder servo move when you move the stick? When the LED goes out does it also stop working?

Yes, the rudder servo move when I move the stick. and when the LED off, I can still make the rudder servo move.

Hmmm odd..... when the LED is out when you move the tail does the gyro move the servo to counter act the movement? I dunno but it might be nothing and maybe the latest code the LED shuts off when no activity is seen for a while? Just a guess but only Angelos could answer.....

You are moving the heli while the gyro initializes, could it be the problem?

Can I get a recommendation for the best servo (money not an object) to use with my Trex SE v2 and the DS760. Thanks.

Finless and the others would be the best to answer this, but the research that I did for weight and performance (on my TREX 450) was the Futaba S9257.
I installed the Futaba S9257 and the Spartan DS760 this past weekend, and it was wicked fast! I had to turn the rudder enpoints down from 150 to 130. It spun so fast I almost wrecked it, due to disorientation.
The S9257 is also a recommended Spartan RC servo. From Spartan's website below:
To get the best performance from your Spartan gyro always use fast tail servos. Futaba S9254, S9256, BLS251 and JR 8900G work very well with our gyros. For smaller helicopters JR 3400G at 6V and Futaba S9257 work very well too. We list these servos for guidance only. There are many other servos on the market that offer similar speeds. Always choose a servo with enough torque for your application.
Thanks Bob, the videos are great. I am also here ready to chat to people if any questions arise.

Hi Angelos,
Does the spartan work just as well if installed on the bottom of the boom instead of the top. Watching the video it looks like the gyro can automatically figure out the correct direction to compensate, but that seems odd since the correction direction would be different if mounted on top than if on the bottom.
Thanks,

Hi Preston a mate of mine uses a JR3400G with great success. The Futaba 9257 is a great choice and is about $20 cheaper and that's what I am going to go on my trex450.

9257 is a rocking servo combo with this gyro.
As for top or bottom of the boom it doesnt matter one bit!

This is covered in the manual. For upright mounting, setup requires a left stick input. For inverted, use right stick.

Ah cool thanks that makes more sense. Mine in is the mail and I will get it by early next week. Sorry for my impatience heh.

Thanks for your suggestion, but i think it is not the related to moving the heli slightly while the gyo initialization.
Angelo suggests it may cause by the broken wire or bad connections. but if you consider I have not touch it since power on. It could not be the issues by both right.
The LED off again around 1:30s

I have to be honest... I HAVE NEVER waited that long to see what the hell happens to the LED. If it locks I go fly... Only Angelos is going to be able to answer this but I BET it does this because a lack of activity for that long? I bet it does it at exactly the same amount of time too? This means it is a software thing........ Chances are this could be common and in the end not have anything to do with gyro performance... Just a guess though and again only Angelos can answer.

Quick question for Spartan DS760 users:
I was playing around with my rudder endpoints, and I whacked them up to 140, wow, did that heli (T-Rex 500) spin fast :) However, when I stopped the bird in its tracks (which it did almost instantly) it did so with quite a noise, my mate said, and he generally thought that a stop like that would eventually strip belt teeth or somesuch.
So I decided to lower the deceleration profile on the DS760 - I took it down from 2 notches from the right, down to about 8 notches from the right.
Now, the heli's tail feels very sloppy - it does not hold as 'tight' as it did before, and it tends to overcorrect - if I pump the throttle, tail will jump right a bit, and then left a quite a bit more, before returning to center.
Is this expected behaviour? Have I just taken the slider down too low?
Cheers

Possibly too much yes... For my 600N I did not want to strip the torque tube but I only dropped it 2 clicks.

Okay now which servo? I'm considering a replacement for a 9254. A 8717 can run 8V but I'm not sure of the framerate. The 251 has a higher frame rate but I think it is 4.8V. I believe the 8900G is slightly lower frame rate as well. What to do? I'm confused as always.

Well I am using a 9254 as shown in my vid. I cant help ya with the others. The Spartan has a setting for the 8900 though.

Just a note. I'm flying the DS760 with a Futaba BLS 251. It flew great but I actually experienced a bit of tail wag while spooling up. It was like a high frequency oscillation of the tail. I backed down the gain to 30 and it mostly cleared so I went to a shorter hole on the horn and now it is gone. Nice gyro!

Wouldn't it be great if the servo manufacturers would post if the particular servo was 1520 or 760uSec? It would sure make things easier. Sorry, but I"m not sure about that 8717.

Finally, my local hobby shop exchanged another spartan 760 to me.:) So that I can have fun with my 450 in this weekend..:clappp
