View Full Version : Futaba 401 VS 611

I haven't seen a good debate in awhile and I am wondering if the Futaba 611 is worth the money versus the 401 I am running. I have noticed that the tail isn't as locked as I'd like and I was wondering if it may be part of the reason I'm starting to have some difficulty doing some of the aerobatics. I know most of the problems are self induced and experience will help, but with the samller throw of the Industrial tail versus the Magnum tail, quicker response might help.
Opinions please......

The 401 on my gasser doesn't hold for anything. I'm thinking I might try a ds760 on there. I hear it holds better than a 611, anyhow.
How's that for a debate, Lou?winkwink

I put the 611 on the turbine with the servo at the end of the boom and have been much happier with the response.

Most noticably, the 401 does not offer a constant pirouette rate as you pirouette and fly around -- in other words it doesn't compensate for air loads on the tail rotor.
Next is that is has no independant left/right limit settings,
And lastly, its not a good with vibration -- the 611 handles that better sensor wise and in essence gives a better locked tail.

How are the CSM line of gyros in comparison to the Futaba gyros? The 720 was designed to be a 611-killer, but is it?

I spent two straight weekends messing with one and pulled it out and put my 401 back in. I suspect that the spongy tape Colin seems to love was the problem but I had enough tinkering and wanted to fly by then.

I'm not sure you can blame the tape. I switched over to a square of Zeal and the results were the same. Anyone want to buy a gently used 720?
Yeah - we found the same - that tape lets the gyro wobble too much
the CSM 720 is very sensitive to vibration
Changed to a firm double sided tape (no rubber) and most problems went away
Had to lower the gain a bit
If the tail shakes on knife edge in the roll increase the acceration gain
They do work very well - but they are not plug and play
(Not as bad as a Webra however)

I second Raja's sentiment. If you are getting into piro maneuvers the 611 is far better at maintaining consistent piro rate, assuming you mechanically have sufficient tail authority anyway... I ran a 401 all the way through learning backwards and it was fine, but get into some wind and try piro moves and it raises the white flag. After the switch I had to adjust my flying a bit as I had apparently been compensating for the gyro and I didn't need to anymore :)

Any digital tail servo. It can run in normal or short pulse just like the 601/611 so 9253, 9254, 9251, 9256 and the new BL one that just came out. I dont recall for sure but I dont think it supports analog servos at 70hz.

How much?
Let me make sure I've got everything that it came with, yet and I'll get back to you. I'm back from my trip on Fri.
