View Full Version : Tail slider a little too smooth

My tail slider is binding a bit... It moves super smoothly, but the movement is a slow, viscous, dampened movement.

As the tri-flow leaks out of tail gearbox, it gets in under the brass bushing and makes the slider too slow.

This is a brand new setup... Upon first hover, the tail is dancing side-to-side... faster than it would look like with a high gyro gain, but slower than a vibration. So I'm betting (hoping) that the tail is dancing because this slow slider is delaying the tail servo reaction.

I guess I have to somehow enlargen the brass bushing to make it looser. How might I try doing that?

I used bocca grease in the closed tail box instead of using tri flow..I'd let it break in some more being it is a new set up..As far as that brass pitch slider,If its caked up to bad,clean good with alcohol and use 800 wet dry sand paper to clean it up better and then it will slide better,but dont get to crazy....Are you running a 601? ...This is only my personal opinion and the way I would do my own.

I'm using a G500T.

I was going to clean out the gearbox and replace the grease with Bullshot. It's even sticker. Maybe not now.

Is bocca grease thicker or thinner than tri-flow?

Even fully dry, this slider has a viscous feel... I think it needs a bit of work as you suggest.

I've never heard of bull shot,so no comment.. bocca grease is not liquid..With that 800 sand paper just yesterday I did the same thing to mine,I rolled a small piece of it up and used it inside my pitch slider as well..I always use tri flow on the sand paper and it makes it really slick,then just clean with alcohol,q tip,and you should be straight..

For the gear box. I use the high speed bearing grease from LubriPlate that Rick's R/C sells. It works great in the gear box and if you want to grease bearings it works great for them also.

Also another choice of grease for the gear box is a Brake and Caliper grease that is sold at most auto parts shops. It is a synthenic grease that is really sticky and does not melt and run out of the gear box.

I have had great success with synthetic wheel bearing grease from Valvoline. It takes the heat and does not run. It is specifically designed for high heat such as CV joints which rely totally on the grease for lubrication. I checked the tail box on my Fury after about 75 flights and the gears looked great. It works good on the thrust bearings in the head as well.

I tore apart the tail assembly and sanded the ID of the brash bushing. It's now at what I would consider to be max for looseness. The action is swift when there is no grease under the bushing. I did several experiments... cleaning the bushing and spindle bone dry, testing, and then re-applying grease, and re-testing.

With the grease on the spindle, it's still slow. It looks like I have to somehow keep the tri-flow off the spindle. I'll probably try one of the synthetic automotive bearing greases.

How do I get the existing grease out of the gearbox?

I used a 3cc syringe and forced about 10cc of this stuff http://www.prod.mobil1.com/products/images/im_grease.gif through the hole at the back of the gearbox. I figure that I displaced most of the tri-flow with this new grease. I just kept pumping it through until it was all new grease coming out through the bearings.

I looked for the synthetic Valvoline that lawrenmd mentioned, but didn't find it. This stuff looks like it's probably equivalent.

Well anyway, the action on the tail slider is much better now. I think this is my cure.
