Hi All of you guys with Hyper 50's. Mine has a little over a gallon on it and I have the bottom end very rich. I also have the top end needle at 1.5 turns which is also rich as most people I talk to say they are dialed in at 1 to 1.15 when fully broken in. I have a lean midrange, where after a punchout to any high throttle flying when I reduce to mid stick it goes lean for a second or three. You can see the smoke greatly reduce when it goes lean. Anybody else having this issue? Will it get better as it breaks in more? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Will,

Just came across your post. Interesting problem and I'm kinda shocked to read that you have been hearing guys running these things at only 1 to 1.15 turns out on the high. From what I've been reading, it seems like 1.5 to 1.25 is where most people have ended up.

Are you still having the same problems? If not, what ended up being the culprit?

Mike

C'mon......nobody else out there running this engine wants to share their needle settings on 30% nitro? :)

The verdict is that 5 minutes into my flight Sat, I broke a oval link and had a boom strike at the bottom of an auto luckily. I should have it flying by this weekend. Working on my Bergen's to.

I notice the same leaning out.....get any altitude and reduce pitch to zero and it goes nuts...I just richened up my low speed needle and actually leaned my high needle and the problem is much better now. Even after leaning the high end, i'm still around 1.5~2 turns out and she's well broken in. I'd guestimate that i loosened my low needle 45+ degrees from factory setting. It makes it a bear to start/idle low, but i think it's tolerable.

I too run the low needle very rich on both the hyper and regular sx-h. Fortunately I haven't had this problem Will. Mine is set at 1.5-1.625 (one and an eighth according to what I just measured ) turns out and doesn't have any power problems. ...haven't had this problem but I'd go richer if I did. Sorry to hear about the mechanical problems - hope to see you soon and we'll go fly our .50's around together some. I think they're fun machines and normally easy to keep going. best of luck -Dan

Thanks for the input guys. My R50 is ready to fly again, Alan Bonner came by yesterday and helped get it back together and kinda inspired me. Still having Gyro problems with my Observer, this time i auto'd it down with no flipover. Sucks to have this issue with new radio gear....

I will be flying the Raptor and probably the Observer again this weekend at the Sheep or at Alan's club.

Have a good Thursday everybody!!

Just an update on my 50 Hyper. Running a smidge richer than factory settings on the low end and just a couple clicks lean from one and one half turns out on the high. Good power and no signs of leaning. If anything, I might be able to lean it a bit more, but I don't feel like risking it when it's pulling 10 and 1/2 degrees of pitch so well.

Good luck with yours Will and keep us posted on the results.

Will,

My new Hyper is doing the same thing. Did you find a solution for yours? Anytime I come into a hover or unload the head, I get a lean bzz bzz and a little tail kick, even though the engine temps fine and seems if anything a little rich both low and high. When was that YS 50 going to be available :D

Yes I did Carl. After about a gallon more fuel, the lean midrange is all but gone. Seems it was break-in related in my case. I also pulled hte carb and blew it out with alcohol after my oval link related doink because there was some dirt around and I figured it coud not hurt while I had the engine out of it.

HTH,

Thanks Will. How much fuel did you run through it before the lean spot went away?

about 1.75 gallons.

A pilot at our field suffered a Hyper failure today. For some reason his helicopter over-sped quite a bit. After landing it was discovered that the top of the piston had failed. A chunk of the top of the piston large enough that the ring came off broke off the piston. This engine had eight gallons through it.
