it might just be me with my first nitro heli but the other day i was doing my first real forward flight with my new 600n. and i noticed that several times it didn't want to descend unless i put a lot of neg.collective in.
i'm running a linear pitch curve in normal, I2 is sort of a sport mode with +13 pos. pitch and limited to about 7-8 deg. of negative, I2 is a v curve (haven't used that yet waiting on a gov.). is this just something a nitro does because the motor is still carrying speed unlike the instant response of my 450 electric? or is this something i need to address?

definately something you need to address. The speed of the motor has nothing to do with the pitch of the blades. when you pull down, it should go down.

If I understand what you're saying...that you mechanically have more positive collective pitch than negative collective pitch setup on the head then you need to correct this first and have the same amount on both positive and negative when running a linear pitch curve on your radio. With it set the way it is you may not be getting near the negative that you normally would therefore you're having to work harder to get the 600 to descend. Hope that helps! :)

i guess i'm asking the question wrong. i have + - 13 on idle 2 i just limited to around -8 for idle one because i dont really use idle 1 for anything more than fast forward flight. what i'm saying is when i put my 450 at midstick on collective ( it has + - 12 ) it descends simply because of a lack of positive pitch.
when my 600 is at midstick 0 pitch it tends to want to stay put for a second or two before losing altitude.

I also failed to qualify my remarks...I was concerned that mechanically your head was setup not the same both ways...I understand what you are saying about using Idle1 for FFF. I think then what you are noticing is normal as my 600 tends to float a bit around midstick before starting to descend as well. However, once you give it any negative pitch it should start to descend without any difficulty.

Sounds to me you may have the normal flight mode pitch curve set up incorrectly. I dont think 0 deg. pitch at mid stick is nesessary for just FFF.
I set my helis up, normal pitch curve:
Low stick= -2 deg.
Mid stick= +5 deg. (hover)
High stick= +10 deg.

Idle up curves:
Low stick= -12 deg.
Mid stick= +5 deg. (hover)
High stick= +12 deg.
With this set up I can hover, FFF, climb and desend in normal mode. When i hit the switch to idle up the model doesnt jump around, nor do I have to land to hit the switch.

my normal mode is set about the same wacojoe but iprefer idle 1 for fff mostly because i don't have a governor and it helps to modulate my throttle better. my idle 1 pitch curve is more like my idle 2 curve but with different throttle curve settings for a little less headspeed. and i have only a very slight jump from n to 1 no jump from 1-2. sounds from the other responses like what i'm experiencing may be normal i'm just not used to the differences a nitro brings to the equation. when i do actually give below center stick collective the bird does descend.

in FFF at 0 pitch , the 600nitro will tend to float especially if you are pulling back on the elev. before it decends because of the larger rotor diameter , the 450 will not do this as much because it's smaller rotor diameter...
