I am new to helis, and as the spring approaches I am getting my raptor 50 v2 ready to fly. I was wondering is mounting the T/R servo on the tail boom a better setup them the stock raptor 50v2 setup. I have never flown my bird but I am adding upgrades to make sure that it is in the new super shape, so when I fly hopefully in the coming weeks it will be a more stable platform to learn with.

Some would say that a tail mounted servo stands a greater risk of failure due to the exhaust oil, but I have been using the same servo (a 9253) on a GY 502 since I bought my first Raptor 4 years ago, that servo has been used on three different helis since and is being used on a 50V2 now.

I went to the tail mount because on the 5th on that 30V1 the stock rod that goes to the tail broke right in the bend.

I have also heard that in a crash...a realy good one...you are more likely to have damage to a tail mounted servo than a fuse mounted servo.

RSL_Mongoose & ThBrtmn are both spot on about the tail mounted servos. Tail mounted servos are effected by exhaust oil and fumes. The exhaust oil and fumes tend to get into the servo and cause it to fail after a period of time. I would stick with the stock Raptor tail setup, it works great and keeps your tail servo nice and clean and fuel free. :)

Thanks for all the info I think I will stick with the stock setup.

Just make sure that your guide rod is really (and I mean really) silky smooth. The 9253 has very little torque and can easily strip gears. (I know all about this)

its a alot more safer in the fuselage,9251 servo cost 110.00 $ if the blades rip it off in a crash...I've bought a couple,no doubt...

there are several raptor's at my field and i am pondering getting one to add to my fleet as well.....Everyone i talk to about a raptor says try it stock....my friend is doing almost every move in the book with his and its bone stock with a 401 gyro ..its seams to be a very adgile heli...i think you will be happy no matter where you put the servo...keep you money for parts or good blades instead of upgradeing it so fast...you will crash sooner or later...then do your upgrades to fix..just my opinion from seeing so many raptor 50's fly..
