View Full Version : Battery Pack Charging After Flight

Would it be advisable to charge the lipo immediately after flight or should I only charge it just before I go for my flight?
Which way would be the best way to prolong life of battery?
Typically I dun play my Rex everyday, I use to charge it everytime I come back from a flight but realise that I got to charge it again when I wanted to fly it again like a week later. Thought that the number of charge cycles will shorten the life of my lipo and now I am only charging it just before my flying day.
Which is better?

I charge after flying, unless I expect to be away from fly for 3 or more weeks. Then I runa short flight (about 70% of normal flight time) to get the pack to about 50% charge. 3.8 - 3.85 volts per cell.

Storage will have to be partially charge?
Any pros and cons?
Reason for me not charging after every flight is that the charge will drop as days goes by.
Hence to get the best fyling time and performance, I just started to charge it only just before I fly.

Vin,
I may do things the wrong way, But I charge after flying as long as I fly withing a week or so.
Long term (over a month) I useally do the half charge thing.
I have some really old Polyquest that have been left fully charged for 2/3 months without ill effect, I could be just lucky on that though.
I do know to NEVER leave them in a completly discharged state even though Lipos drain a lot slower than other battetries they still drain and if they get below that magic 3v per cell you are taking to much risk of ruining a pack.
in my opinion one week with a full charge is not that bad, BUT that's just how I do it.
I like to be ready when the urge hit's without waiting 1/2 hrs

Lipos do not self discharge like NiCd/NiMH, so you don't need to charge just before flying with lipos.

Whenever I get done flying I let the packs cool to room temp, then throw them on the BC6, balance them to "storage" which is 3.8v/cell then store them in the align small case. When I know im going to fly I put them on the charger, balance to full charge then fly.
Been working good for me so far and after 50 cycles still has the same output as new (sometimes feels like more).
