I have had a close call before, but nothing like that. At least you were wearing glasses.

well, i had just did the tail mod with the weights, well it was on a plastic tail, and i used SS balls (too heavy by the way, use the aluminum for plastic tail) well the SS balls when spun up dont want to center they want to rotate away from center. to much weight, i knew this before i put on the tail blades but i figured that aerodynamic resistance from the tail blades would even it all out, not so much!! so when i test flew it as soon as i gave it a little rudder the tail started shaking and wagging like crazy - way too much gain on the gyro. and before i could get it down i hit myself.
so I'm going to leave the mod, but experiment with gain settings. i have a rotating platform that i can strap my Helli to and ill spin it up wearing a football helmet!!

How do you plan on fitting a football helmet to the heli? :)
I'm glad you got away with this without seroius damage... I'm thinking a post of a guy in Thailand or somewhere in Asia who recently lost an eye because of a Trex 450 hit. I guess it goes without saying that we should all learn from this stuff.. I bought a pair of flying glasses after reading the 'lost eye' post and wear them pretty religiously.

Wow, sorry about what happened. I'm Glad that the main blades didn't get you. Be careful.

Shit! Thanks for the safety reminder...
I've wondered about doing the mod on the plastic tail, if the SS balls might be too heavy. So did you put the aluminum balls on, and it's ok now? I believe someone said the SS weigh .4g each. Anyone happen to know how much the aluminums weigh?
I'll be putting the heli out further next time. Especially trying the tail mod for the first time.

WOW, that doesn't look so good. What hit you? Tail blades, mains?
I had my plastic tail modded with SS balls with no problems. I removed the stand-off on the balls. drilled the blade grips with 1/16" bit on each side. Installed one SS ball with shortened screw on each side of grip. I had no binding, and no flying balls(haha, no pun). Even when I crashed that tail (destroyed it) the balls stayed in place. I think if you mod the plastic tail correctly it will work as good as the metal tail mod. You just have to make sure there is NO BINDING ANYWHERE. FYI, I have the 9650 and 401 on tail. I did lower the gain a little when I started. Your description sounds like a linkage/servo/gyro issue. How far did you lower the gain? Maybe that created an ocsillation between the servo and linkage (rod). Just speculating here....

I am guilty of flying too close to myself also. I am working on getting my heli's farther away and higher up. Even these little ones will chop you up.

That is kinda scary, the cuts look like they will heal up though.

Man, remember guys, close and low is cool, but you really need that buffer zone; especially while learning or making equipment changes. I personally think sims should enforce the dangers of flying close by allowing the pilot to be struck by the aircraft and showing a big skull and cross bones on the screen or something .

I had similar injuries caused by a Trex450.
My girlfriend found my new 450se v2 stashed in the garage and hit me with it,Sill boxed.
She really swung that sucker.
Hope it heals ok,you were very lucky.

You should have given her the Homer Simpson apology - "Honey, I swear...I never thought you'd find out."

Oh man, so sorry you got ripped up like that. Glad it wasn't the mains! That one really hits home. I crashed my 600 over the weekend and for a few seconds I thought it was homing in on me!

My Blade Pro reminds me of the "chaser" firecrackers on New Years and 4th of July. Once it is in the air, run, jump, or tuck and roll. Yeah, it's a POS. But serious, these helis can turn on you be mechanical failure or numb thumbs. Keep a safe distance. Nose-in hovering still puts butterflies in my stomach, especially with the TRex 600.
