View Full Version : First Crash

Wel not a true crash, since it wasn't off the ground. So a tip over.

I ended up setting it down on a 3/4 view pointed at me (nose in but with the nose pointed slightly to my right). So I figured I would just lift off that way. Bad move, I got into a wobble and over she went.

Final tally:

Blades - this thing will throw blades a LONG way.

Flybar - NO S**T. :)

Main shaft - bent in two places

Tail boom - broke off just behind the clamp - CF boom anyone?

Tail boom supports - these things are very weak, I have new ones coming, lplus a Trex 600 set to see if they will work. The stock ones broke off both end (plastic) and bent the al tubes.

Vertical fin

One short head link and the ball on the seesaw - A CNC seesaw may have prevented this.

I also scraped the paddles and tail blades.

All in all, not that bad. Spindle is fine, which odd since the main shaft bent so badly.

I got it back flying, but no boom supports and no vertical fin.

BTW anybody want to get rid of their decal sheet? I kind of like the tail decals, and of course mine are toast. :)

Damn Terry - that is too bad!!

Hope you were flying woodies.

I have a set of spares for the first crash... but I ordered what normally I needed when I crashed the 450se. Some of the stuff that you are replacing, I don't have (boom supports, fins)... I guess I need to place a new order with John at readyheli and get some more stuff for that first crash ;-)

I wonder how come the main shaft is bent in 2 places? On the 450 it just bends in 1 (at least in all of mine).

That IS odd that the spindle is not bent!! With the main shaft bent in 2 places, I would have put money on the spindle also being bent.

Let us know how the t600 boom supports work out... that would be good to know.

Glad you got it back flying so quickly!!

Brent

Sorry to hear about your first crash, but at least you got it out of the way early. Now you can get down to some serious flying!

Sorry to hear that Terry - glad to hear that you are back in the air already

Thanks for the kind words.

The big reason for the post was to point out the things that you may not stock for crashes, that may break. I had the normal stuff, but no boom supports, no fin. And because I had the CNC head, I was able to raid the plastic head for the ball and screw. And I had extra link ends (I made the short link with all thread like Finless mentions in his vid) because of using Rapotr and Rocket City links. And I thought the see saw may have gotten damaged where the screw pulled out, so I ordered a spare (like $4). But a new screw tightened up micely, so a drop of CA and I am happy.

I have no idea how the main bent in two places. I need to take a picture, but it bent just above the upper bearing, and in between the two bearings.

The inner grip bearings are a bit notchy, but I checked the spindle with the turn one nut and watch the other grip method, and I pulled it and checked it against a straight edge. Passed both tests and the new blades tracked perfectly. But these two 1 full wrap and one half wrap of tape to balance, although the CG was spot on.

I am hoping the Trex 600 boom supports can work, and are like the Trex 450 ones, where you can just replace the piece of CF rod. :)

Bad luck on the 'tip over' :( Had my first crask ever a week ago & got off a fair bit lighter thankfully...

I didnt break boom supports but had thought few weeks ago when looking through a store these (http://takeoffandland.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=65&products_id=939&osCsid=ece6eebc3b198d613b221ec6d27787bf) would be a neat upgrade...

Best of luck anywayz, weather allowed me my first flight since crash on weekend was a lil nervous at first but all good by the end :-)

If the Trex 600 ones don't work, I will try a set of those.

any other boom support that will fit the hurricane?

Im sure any larger supports would be usable, you could always do a lil DIY (cutting/shortening/epoxying) if need be ;-)

I would just make your own. Pretty simple with a carbon rod.

Man, I love ReadyHeli. I placed the order online on Sat mid-day. Package was waiting when I got home today. :noteworthy

I got the Trex 600 boom mounts, and they will need to be shortened. They look like they are about 3.5 inches too long. The ends look like they are pinned. I will probably not get to it this weekend.

I will probably order some of the QuickUK Raptor support ends menitoned above (red would be cool) and DIY with the carbon fiber rod.

One concern that came to mind is, the boom supports are held on by self tapping screws. If the boom support gets too strong, it may rip the screws out.

Still need end pieces.

I had in mind using some end pieces off of some other supports which allot of us have on hand. I will play with it. I'm sure 1 of us can figure out something nice.

Thanks for the update Terry!

If you decide to get the QuickUK ends... let us know. I am thinking I want to try this mod. I think you are on to something.

I just emailed Quick about the lengths of the Raptor 30 and 50 boom supports. I like the red color. :)
