For whatever reason my WMP on my desktop will not play AVI files, well, it will play them, I have sound but the video is just a white screen???

From what limited amount of searching I have been able to do (no internet at the moment, have to go to a cafe) it seems I need drivers. How can I do that if I can't get the computer online?

Any help will ba appreciated.

Burn the drivers to a disk or put them on a memory stick. Then load them on your computer.

AVI is not a format it is a video container. Odds are the video is DivX. Download the player. http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/player/

Yea, you can either download divx, or install the divx codec. Sometimes quicktime will play them also.

Sometimes  It will the DivX codec is loaded. Also I have seen AVI containers hold 3vix files (http://www.3ivx.com/) those will play native in Quicktime and "should" play in Windows. Not sure exactly there.

It plays fine in WMP in any other computer I try so I know WMP will play it so I don't need a different player, just need to find out what is missing from my WMP.

What I am trying to play is a file from a flycameraone.

Thing is that I don't know what drives I need to download. That is the question. Usually you just let WMP download what it needs.

Install the Divx codec, you need that for WMV player to play the file.

The DIvX codec you can delete the player.

I would really like to get away from having to load another program. Still trying to wrap my head around what I can do to WMP on my desktop to make it work like it does on every other computer I have tried it on.

It is a DIVX CODEC not a PROGRAM. You do not have to install the player.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec <- What a codec is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec)

THAT is your answer. Sorry if you are not liking it. :arggg:

Not saying that I did not like it, saying I did not understand, big difference.

Btw, from your own link: A codec is a device or program...............................

Well I installed the codex portion of the non program and still no go. Do I have to do anything other than install it?

Any other ideas??

I have used a program called gspot in the past to determine what codecs are used in a given video file as there are so damn many floating around:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Just think of a codec as a plugin for a media player that affords it compatibility with different COmpression/DECcompression schemes. It is kind of confusing that a given file type could use a multitude of these algorithms, as one typically thinks of a single file type using a single type of compression (MP3, gif, jpeg, zip, etc.)

Also note that XVid is a pretty popular open-source alternative codec to Divx now that the divx standard is tainted with loyalties, etc.:

I ended up replacing our DVD players with divx-compatible ones, so I didn't have to deal with all those headaches. I just drop the files to a CD/DVD and play :). My RCA has a card reader and HDMI upconversion built in and only cost me $85 a year ago.

Where is this video?

They are too large to send. Part of the problem, I can't edit them down cause I can't see them.

Come Friday I am moving up to WA and will have internet access for this computer then so I should be able to either reinstall WMP or at least let it update itself whatever it needs.

I do thank you for the help you have given.

If it means anything the files are from a flycamone camera.

When the file opens look at the properties in the menu. What does Windows think it is encoded with?

Under video codec there is only a (-) nothing else, same for audio codec.

Now this in on a computer at work that does play the file, I have not been able to check at home on the computer that does not play the file to see if it is any different.

Just download VLC Player and be done with it. It'll play anything, it's free, it'll run on almost every platfrom etc...

http://www.videolan.org/

Cool thing about it it will stream to another PC/Mac etc. Great for when I did my back in and could only lie down. Wife loaded the DVD on the main PC and it was streamed to my laptop on the bed :D

Yup, that works. Still want to figure out what is up with the WMP. I don't get video with my edit program either.

Thanks,

Thomas
