a video card makes all the difference!!!!

A little background...

I gave up Windows boxen 4 years ago when I got into graphics and video. I am a sworn Mac user now. Before 2001 I had a PC since there was a PC (since the Vic-20 days in 1981) But, my newest PC was a 300 Mhz P3 with 128 megs of RAM running 98.

I knew I needed some serious sim time. Not wanting to drop a few hundred on a new PC I found an old copy of G2 on eBay. Dropped it in there yesterday and it loaded fine. I then got a -WARNING-

I will paraphrase:

"Your video card is old and a piece of junk. Attempting to start program with emulation"

10 minutes later (no B.S. 10 minutes) the program starts and then locks up! grrr... :arggg:

I open up the box and find out I, at least, have a first generation PCI slot in there... Sheewh

I go to Staples and pick up the cheapest PCI video card they have. Now I have as much video RAM as system memory LOL!

Luckily the Win ME drivers work on Win 98 and she boots. I get the display setting straight and start G2 up.

BAM! It loads everything up in like 15 seconds! YEAH! :banana

Anyway there is hope for you folks with old PC's like myself!

DebianDog,

Being a long-time unix-user and having sworn off everything windows and PC related, I too was longing for a proper sim for the Mac.
So, I started writing my own.

We're still in a pretty early state of development, but things are progressing splendidly.

Check out the screenshots at http://rcfs.sourceforge.net/

This work is two-sided as well. First, I get a sim on Macs.
Second, releasing a high-quality sim _for free_ should get Reflex and RealFlight/Knifeedge to get their asses in gear and start fixing their products and their support-apparatus, since thats the only thing the'll be able to sell on after this. At least when it comes to heli simulation.

Dont worry.. We have that base covered as well. You'll need parts for approx $5 from Radioshack. :)

When we're ready for a first beta release.

For now, all the files are available through CVS.
You can reach me using the email function on the project page.

Oh, and it wont only run on Macs. It already runs on Windows and IRIX as well, and Linux is in the making.
What we're currently working on is the user-friendlyness of the sim, and final work on the physics.

If you need any beta testers slow, I have a few Linux boxes here, 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels. I would be happy to help test.
